CHAPTER THREE
3. Design work and accomplishment of activities
3.1 Design works detail sample
TASK 1:Gihon Hotel Ceremony Hall Interior Design
Project Description:
This is interior design project for the ceremony hall located inside the Gihon
Hotel. The project involved two phases, with the first phase focusing on the interior
design of the Awash Adarash ceremony hall, situated on the first floor of the building.
The second phase encompassed the design of the entire building, which are two
additional ceremony halls (Safari and Blue Salon) and the corridors. While the first
design phase has been completed, the second phase is still in progress.

Project Background:
The Awash Adarash ceremony hall, part of the Gihon Hotel, has a rich history dating
back to the reign of Emperor Haile Selassie and continues to serve various functions.
Prior to contacting our office, the hotel had engaged another architectural firm for
their other buildings. However, they were dissatisfied with the results as the previous
firm had completely transformed the interior, giving it a Western look. Our approach
aimed to elevate the space while honoring the main characteristics of the neighboring
areas, ensuring the preservation of the hotel's history and ambiance.

Design Concept:
The design concept for the Awash Adarash ceremony hall focused on integrating key
elements from the surrounding spaces while adding a touch of luxury. The following
design elements were incorporated:

a. Color Palette: The interior design predominantly features two colors: golden and
brown. The brown color connects the new design with the existing spaces, while
the golden color elevates the overall aesthetic. Warm light colors were chosen to
create a cozy and luxurious atmosphere.
b. Materials: To maintain the historical character, wooden beam ceilings, half-wall
paneling, carpet, and artistic arches were utilized. The wooden beam ceiling and
half-wall paneling were inspired by neighboring spaces and serve as fundamental
interior elements. The stage is emphasized by an arch, further accentuating the
classical ambiance.
c. Accessories and Decor: Ornamented window frames represent classical style
and adorn one side of the wall. On the other side, the entrance features a
wall-mounted statue of Mo Anbesa the Yihuda. Additionally, a large frame show-
casing the history of the building is positioned on the remaining wall.

Design Alternatives:
In addition to my design concept, my senior architect and intern friend also developed
alternative designs. This approach provided the client with a variety of choices and
options to consider, ensuring that the final design aligns with their preferences.

07
PHASE 2:

Project Description

The second phase of the project involves designing the interior spaces of the
Safari and Blue Salon ceremony halls, as well as the private corridor and entrance
hall. The client's preference was to incorporate a blue touch for the Blue Salon and a
red touch for the Safari. With this direction in mind, the design aims to create a
classical and luxurious ambiance while incorporating the specified color schemes.

Blue Salon Design:

For the Blue Salon, my assigned area of focus, I aimed to create an interior design
that embodies classical luxury with a blue touch. The color palette predominantly
consists of three colors: blue, white, and gold. The blue color provides the desired
blue touch, while the combination of white and gold imparts a luxurious appearance.
The design concept maintains the use of gold and white colors, which were estab-
lished in the previous phase, to ensure visual coherence throughout the hotel.

Design Approaches:
The existing ceiling, which is in good condition, will be retained as part of the design
approach for both the Blue Salon and Safari ceremony halls. This decision was made
to preserve the existing architectural elements and maintain the historical character of
the spaces.

Project Progress:
At the current stage, each team member has been assigned specific areas to work on. I
have focused on the interior design of the Blue Salon, while other team members
have been assigned to the Safari, private corridor, and entrance hall. We have submit-
ted our initial work to our senior architect for review and are awaiting feedback to
proceed with further refinements and finalization of the designs.

CONCLUSION

In conclusion, the second phase of the Gihon Hotel ceremony hall interior
design project focuses on the Safari and Blue Salon, along with the private corridor
and entrance hall. The design concept aims to create a classical and luxurious atmos-
phere while incorporating the desired blue touch for the Blue Salon and red touch for
the Safari. The color palettes have been carefully selected to achieve the desired
ambiance, with gold and white serving as unifying elements throughout the design.
As the project progresses, we anticipate receiving feedback from our senior architect
to guide further refinements and the finalization of the designs.

PROJECT STEPS

The project consisted of the following steps:

a. Site Visit and Taking Measurements: A site visit was conducted to evaluate the
existing conditions, dimensions, layout, and lighting of the Awash Adarash cere-
mony hall. The hotel staff was consulted to understand their expectations and
specific requirements for the space.
b. Preparation of CAD and SketchUp Files: Based on the site visit and measure-
ments, we prepared detailed CAD and SketchUp files. These files accurately
represented the current state of the ceremony hall and served as the foundation for
the design process.
c. Interior Design: The interior spaces were designed based on the conceptual
approach and design inspirations, ensuring a harmonious integration of the exist-
ing elements with the proposed design.
d. Rendering: The finalized design was rendered to showcase the intricate details
and features of the interior design. The renderings provided a visual representa-
tion of the proposed changes and helped the client to better envision the final
outcome.

CONCLUSION
In conclusion, the interior design project for the Gihon Hotel ceremony hall, ,
aimed to elevate the space while preserving the historical and cultural significance of
the hotel. By incorporating elements from the neighboring areas and utilizing a color
palette, materials, and decor that exude a classical ambiance, the design successfully
creates a luxurious and inviting atmosphere. The project's first phase has been com-
pleted, and the second phase, encompassing the Safari and Blue Salon ceremony halls
and the corridors, is currently underway.

TASK 2:Federal Police Prefabricated g+4 Dormitory

Project Objuctive:
The primary objective of this project is to familiarize ourselves with the
principles and processes involved in prefabricated building construction. Our
office specializes in designing and constructing prefabricated buildings, and
this project was the first one we undertook after joining the company.

Project Description:
The project involves the construction of a four story prefabricated
dormitory to accommodate federal police students. Each room is designed to
house up to four students and includes its own bathroom. The basement level
of the building contains an office and a storage area. Although the entire build-
ing is designed as a unified structure, it must provide separate accommodations
for men and women, with two distinct entrances to ensure privacy and security.

Material and Prefabrication:

Given that this project focuses on prefabricated construction, the com-
ponents of the building, including the slabs, columns, stairs, and beams, are
manufactured off-site. This approach enhances construction efficiency and
allows for precise fabrication of elements to meet design specifications. The
prefabricated parts are fabricated outside the site, ensuring a high level of
quality control and reducing on-site construction time.

Building Specifications
As I understand from the cad file of Prefabricated components The slabs
used in the construction of the dormitory have dimensions of 4.2 meters by 4.2
meters with its own joining method. Additionally, the stair design extends from
one column to another with specific design requirement. The project also
includes cantilevers and balconies with dimensions limited to 1.2 meters by 4.2
meters.

Design Challenges
The project poses design challenges due to the restrictions on shape and
dimensions imposed by the prefabricated nature of the building. The predeter-
mined sizes of slabs, columns, stairs, and beams limit the freedom of design,
making it crucial to find creative solutions within these constraints.

CONCLUSION

In conclusion, the project encompasses the construction of a prefabricat-

ed dormitory for federal police students. The building will consist of four
floors, providing rooms that can accommodate four students each, with indi-
vidual bathrooms. The prefabricated approach ensures efficient construction
and quality control.

TASK 4: Prefabricated Fence Design Proposal

Project Description:
This project presents a proposal for designing a prefabricated fence to be consid-
ered as a cost-effective and time-friendly solution. The goal was to propose a design
that can be easily manufactured off-site and installed quickly while maintaining the
desired functionality and aesthetic appeal. As an intern, my responsibility was to
create a working drawing CAD file, 3D model renders, and explore alternative ways
to incorporate steel grills into the prefabricated fence design.

Design Process:
To begin the design process, I was provided with a detailed PDF file that elaborated
on prefabricated fence design principles. This document served as a valuable resource
and provided guidance for creating an effective design proposal. The primary deliver-
ables for the project included a working drawing CAD file and 3D model renders.
These were prepared to provide a comprehensive visual representation of the
proposed prefabricated fence design. The CAD file contained detailed technical
drawings, including measurements, specifications, and assembly instructions, ensur-
ing accurate manufacturing and installation. The 3D model renders showcased the
design from different angles, enabling a better understanding of the proposed aesthet-
ics and functionality.

Alternative Design Exploration:

In addition to the standard prefabricated fence design, I was tasked with exploring
alternative ways to incorporate steel grills into the design. This presented an opportu-
nity to experiment and propose innovative solutions. I developed two design alterna-
tives, each incorporating steel grills in different ways, while still adhering to the
principles of prefabrication, cost-effectiveness, and time efficiency. These alternatives
were carefully documented, providing clear visual representations and explanations
of the design concepts.

CONCLUSION

In conclusion, this project involved designing a prefabricated fence as a

cost-effective and time-friendly solution. As an intern, my responsibilities included
preparing a working drawing CAD file, 3D model renders, and exploring alternative

TASK 5: Developing a 3D Model of an Apartment Site

Project Description:

This project involved the creation 3D models of six apartments, along with a
site rendering, for client presentations. As an intern, my primary responsibility was to
develop accurate and captivating 3D representations within a limited timeframe.

Project Steps:
a. Initial Design: I received a complete design of the apartments and the site in a
CAD file from senior architects. The CAD file lacked any landscape design and
only contained an empety surface.
b. Landscape Design: I began by designing the landscape to enhance the overall
visual appeal of the site. This required additional effort since the original CAD
file did not include any landscape elements.
c. 3D Modeling:Using Revit, I converted the CAD building file into a 3D model.
