Democracy.
Refers to the form of government where the leaders or the government
interred into power on the behalf of citizens who elected them to be their representatives,
in another word we can say democracy is a form of government of people for the people,
where elections is an important forum to choose their leadership. Under this form of
government the majority citizens have rights to participate in government matters such as
decision making, questioning the government performance and other issues concerning
their country and government. But also under this form of government respect of human
rights is a key point or Central consideration. Democracy is very important tool for the
development of community or society.So, the following are the importance of democracy
towards development.
a) Political stability. This is because under democracy there is free and fair transfer of power
from one person or group of people to another, normally one among the important thing
for development is political stability where human activities like tourism, trade and so
many other are conducted freely and confidently. So the presence of democracy in a
country leads to political stability which enhances development in a society or
community.
b) Protection of human right. Under democracy the protection of human rights enhances
people to be free and confidently on moving from place to place for business, enjoyment
and so many other things. Also ensures security within the society since the government
has the duty to protect each individuals rights as per Article 12 to 29 of the Constitution
of the United Republic Of Tanzania Of 1977. So democracy is very important tool for the
development of the society or community.
c) Leads to free market around the community. Through democracy is where every
individual within a community has the right to conduct any business allowed before the
Law at any place or specialized place, but also individuals has the right to move their
business around many places within the country and outside the country, For example in
Tanzania there is a lot of Tanzania citizens in Rwanda, Congo , Malawi, Zambia, UK ,
Canada, Turkey And China conducting their business, but also within the country there is
many people who moves from one region to another, whole is due to the Democracy. So
we see the importance of democracy towards development, since without democracy
there may be many restrictions. So, democracy is a very important tool for development
of community or society.
d) Leads to innovations and creativity. This comes due to freedom of expression vested to
the majority citizens, for example this allows people to express their innovative and
creative ideas for the betterment of the community, and this can be on economic, social
and political matters, There are some countries which experience political instability in
Asia and Africa, the majority citizens fail to make innovations and creativity, so under
democracy we see how it is important tool for development of the society or country.
e) Transparency and accountability. Democracy leads to development in that way because
under democracy majority citizens have that rights to know what is going on in the
country, where the democracy and Law’s requires leadership especially executive and
parliament to be transparent and accountable, so that makes leaders to have no choice
rather than being accountable and transparent to facilitate development, that’s why we
say democracy is an important tool for development of the community.
f) Leads to free and fair competition, So through democracy people is various aspects
compete in good ways through challenges such as in economic, innovations, politics and
social aspects at all. In that way the competition within a democratic country enhances
development of the community in peaceful way.
g) Interaction among the people. Democracy allows movement of people which enhances
development, for example due to democracy in Tanzania there is peace and security
which interact the movement of people from different parts of the world to Tanzania,
where sectors such as tourism, agriculture, science and technology as well as business
develops daily. So democracy is a tool for development.
h) Helps to get competent leadership. Free and fair political competition within a democratic
country leads to the generation of good and competent leaders, for example, the late
President John Pombe Magufuli, Mkapa, Hataki Obama, Jomo Kenyatta and so many
other competent politicians in different countries.In that way democracy leads to
development of the community.
Generally. Democracy enhances development of the community in all aspects such as
political, social and economic aspects, It is better for the country to maintain its
democracy due to its importance, But also other form of government is Dictatorship
government where the leaders comes into power through force and unfair ways, this kind
of government was experienced in Germany under Adolph Hitler and Japan as well as
Italy under Benito Mussolini. There was too much killing and also lead to the world war.
So democracy is more important form of government since it is friendly to the people.
