Unit – 5

3.) Mix design for M35 Concrete :

1. TARGET STRENGTH FOR MIX PROPORTIONING

f’ck=fck + 1.65 s
where
f’ck-target average compressive strength at 28 days,
fck characteris cs compressive strength at 28 days, and s = standard devia on.

From Table I of IS 10262:2009, Standard Devia on, s = 5 N/mm². Therefore, target strength = 35+
1.65 x 5 = 43.25 N/mm².

2. SELECTION OF WATER CEMENT RATIO:

Adopted maximum water-cement ra o = 0.4.
From the Table 5 of IS 456 for M35 grade concrete & MILD Exposure condi ons,
maximum Water Cement Ra o is 0.45

0.4<0.45 Hence ok.

3. SELECTION OF WATER CONTENT

From Table 2 of IS 10262:2009, maximum water content for 20 mm aggregate = 186 litre (for 25 to 50
mm slump range)
Es mated water content for 100 mm slump=186+ (6/100 x 186) =197 litre.

Based on trials with Super plas cizer water content reduc on of 20% has been achieved. Hence the
arrived water content = 197-[197 x (20/100)] = 158 litre.

4. CALCULATION OF CEMENT CONTENT

Adopted w/c Ra o = 0.4

Cement Content= 158/0.4 = 395 kg/m³

From Table 5 of IS 456, Minimum cement content for " MILD exposure condi ons =300kg/m³

385 kg/m² >300 kg/m³ hence ok.

5. PROPORTION OF VOLUME OF COARSE AGGREGATE AND FINE AGGREGATE CONTENT

From Table 3 of (IS 10262:2009) Volume of coarse aggregate corresponding to 20 mmm size
aggregate and fine aggregate (Zone II) for water-cement ra o of 0.50=0.62.
Therefore, corrected propor on of volume of coarse aggregate for the
water-cement ra o of 0.4= 0.64

For pumpable concrete these values should be reduced up to 10%. Therefore, volume of coarse

aggregate 0.64 x 0.9 =0.576.

Volume of fine aggregate content 1-0.576= 0.424.

6. MIX CALCULATIONS

The mix calcula ons per unit volume of concrete shall be as follows:

a) Volume of concrete = 1 m3

b) Volume of cement =[Mass of cement]/[Specific Gravity of Cement] x 1000)

= 395/3.12 x 1000= 0.126 m3

c) Volume of water =[Mass of water)/(Specific Gravity of water) x 1000]

= 158/1 x 1000) = 0.158 m3

Mass of chemical admixture @2% of cement weight =7.9 kg

d) Volume of chemical admixture = 7.9/(1.14 x 1000) = 0.0069 m3

e) Volume of all in aggregate= [a-(b+c+d)] = [1-(0.126+0.158+0.0069)] = 0.71 m3

f) Mass of coarse aggregate= e x Volume of Coarse Aggregate x Specific Gravity of Fine Aggregate x
1000
= 0.71 x 0.576 x 2.66x 1000 =1088 kg/m3
g) Mass of fine aggregates= e x Volume of Fine Aggregate x Specific Gravity of Fine Aggregate x 1000
=0.71 x 0.424 x 2.63 x 1000 =792 kg/m3

7. MIX PROPORTIONS

Cement = 395 kg/m3

Water = 158 kg/m3

Fine aggregate = 792 kg/m3

Coarse aggregate= 1088 kg/m3

Chemical admixture= 7.9 kg/m3

Water-cement ra o= 0.4

Mix Propor on By weight = 1 : 2.00 : 2.75
