Exam Questions for Theory of Structures II

This document is an end-of-semester exam for the course ECV 2300: Theory of Structures II at Meru University, focusing on civil and environmental engineering. It consists of two sections, with the first section containing various theoretical questions related to retaining walls, stress types, and concrete properties, while the second section includes practical problems involving truss analysis, retaining wall stability, cantilever loading, and column crippling load calculations. Students are instructed to answer question one and any two additional questions within a time limit of three hours.

4. A cantilever of length 2m carries a uniformly distributed load of 1.5KN/M run over the
whole length and a point load of 2KN at a distance of 0.5m from the free end. Draw the
Shear force and BM for the cantilever. (15mks)

5. The external and internal diameters of a hollow cast iron column are 5cm and 4cm
respectively. If the length of this column is 3m and both of its ends are fixed, determine
the crippling load using Rankine’s formulae. ( Take σc=550N/MM2 and a= 1/1600)
