BDSM and Sex Toy Maintenance and Care
If you want your toys to last a very long time then you should take care of them properly. Sure it
sounds like something your mother would say but it also holds true to your kink tools and sex toys.
Here's a short list of common materials and their cleaning methods.
Before Use
As soon as you receive your new toy, go down this checklist:
• Inspect your sex toy for imperfections, including rough seams (you may be able to file down
very small seams with a fingernail file), discoloration (which may be an expected part of the
manufacturing process or indicate extreme temperature exposure), or tears in softer materials
such as jelly and realistic materials.
• Check for cracks in acrylic, glass, and plastic toys or plastic pieces of toys (battery packs,
handles, etc.).
• Insert fresh batteries to make sure the toy works properly; see the online product page for a
battery diagram if insertion is unclear.
Cleaning
• Silicone: Hypoallergenic and easiest to maintain, silicone dildos and non-battery-operated
toys may be boiled for two to three minutes, or washed with soap and water. NEVER boil
silicone sex toys with electrical components. Let them air dry completely or dry with a lint-free
cloth before storing.
• Plastic/Acrylic/Glass: All can be washed with warm water and anti-bacterial hand soap and
sterilized using an alcohol-soaked cotton ball (rinse thoroughly afterward); acrylic and glass
toys may be boiled or submerged in hot water if they're not battery-operated.
• Rubber/Latex and Jelly: These products are extremely porous, so be sure to wash them
thoroughly with warm water and anti-bacterial hand soap, and rinse so that no trace of soap is
left, as it can degrade the material and cause irritation to you. Again, while it's a good idea to
use a condom with any insertable toys, it's an especially good idea with these materials.
• Realistics: Names include CyberskinTM, FuturoticTM, NeoSkin®, Soft TouchTM, UltraSkin, and
FauxskinTM (if you're unsure of the type of material, check the packaging or product page),
and this type of material is widely used for erection rings and masturbation sleeves, as well as
vibrators and dildos. Thoroughly wash with warm (never hot) water and a liquid antibacterial
soap, then let air dry completely. Once dry, sprinkle with the included "renewing" powder or
cornstarch. Never use talcum powder or baby powder, as these can cause irritation and
sometimes larger problems for women (pure talc is fine but very difficult to find).
• Suede: Keep this item clean and in good condition. Let your flogger air dry after use as
moisture cannot be removed with a cloth. A special suede brush or suede stone will bring back
the nap of the suede and might remove some dirt. Do not use cleaners, conditioners or scotch

guard on suede. Dr. Charles Moser, a nation’s leading authorities on sexuality-related medicine
recommends hanging up floggers in a ventilated place for a week after use. HIV and Hep C
viruses, cannot live outside the body in the air.
• Top Grain Leather: Keep this item clean and in good condition. Wipe with a soft, barely
damp cloth after each use. Handle and tails can be cleaned with a quality saddle soap used
sparingly. A quality leather conditioner (such as Feibings Aussie Leather Conditioner) should be
used as needed. When conditioning the tails only apply conditioner on the smooth, top grain
side, not the suede-like side.
• Horse Hair: The flogger will absorb body oils and dirt from contact with your submissive.
When the flogger begins to mat and tangle, a shampoo is needed. The flogger may also
require shampooing from contaminants in your toy bag, or from dust if the flogger is stored
hanging up, uncovered. Gently brush with a wide tooth comb starting at the tips working your
way up to the handle with each stroke to remove any tangles from usage. Thoroughly wet the
hair with warm water. Do not immerse the handle in water! Covering the handle with a
sandwich bag or something similar makes this part easier. Carefully work a mild shampoo be
careful so as not to tangle and matt the hair. Rinse and apply protein conditioner and let it
soak on the hair for a few minutes. Rinse and pat dry with a clean towel Let it hang dry for
awhile if need be. Once hair is completely dry then brush it again gently with a wide tooth
comb. It is best to store this flogger hanging straight down so the hair is not bent in any way!
Do not over wash the hair! If you gently brush it after every session and carefully store the
flogger, you will only need to wash it once or twice a year or after a session where it may have
been bloodied or covered with bodily fluid. An old nylon stocking pulled down over the handle
and rolled down over the hair will help keep the flogger untangled when in your toy bag.
• Rubber: Mix a mild antibacterial soap in a sink of warm water and lower in the tails of the
flogger. Be careful not to immerse the handle, especially if its leather! With your hands gently
wash each tail with the sudsy water when each has been taken care of drain the basin and
then rinse the suds off the tails with warm water. Wipe dry with a clean towel. At this point
you can talc it if it's being put away for long storage or shine it if you like with a rubber
conditioner. Be certain to store out of sunlight and away from heat sources.
• Hemp: Place the rope in an old pillowcase. Wash ropes separately in your washing machine
on gentle cycle using color-safe bleach - use care, as colors may bleed. Hang rope in loose
coils to dry (4 days). Once dry, re-oil with a small quantity of scent free baby oil or high quality
mineral oil and let dry for two more days before use.
