Daniel Chapter Eleven: Part 3:

Verse 29
29
At the time appointed he shall return, and come toward the
south; but it shall not be as the former, or as the latter.

Facts about the Above Verse:

1. “At the time appointed” refers to the end of the

prophetic period “even for a time” from verse 24 which is A.D.
330.

2. This prophetic period is the 360 years of power that

Rome exercised in its city after the victory of Caesar Augustus
over Mark Antony in the battle of Actium in 31 B.C.

3. Extending 360 years into the future brings us to A.D. 330

which is the time spoken of here.

4. What significant event we see in verse 29 to mark the

end of A.D. 330 is that Rome returned again and went “toward
the south.”

5. In Daniel 11, the south is Egypt. Rome went toward

Egypt, but not actually to it here.
2

6. When Rome went this time it did not carry the same
significance of conquest as it did when it went to Egypt (the
former) with the victory in 31 B.C., or when it went to Judea (the
latter) when it destroyed Jerusalem in A.D. 70.

Verse 30
30
For the ships of Chittim shall come against him: therefore he
shall be grieved, and return, and have indignation against the
holy covenant: so shall he do; he shall even return, and have
intelligence with them that forsake the holy covenant.

Facts about the Above Verse:

1. The “him” that is being attacked by the ships of Chittim

is Rome.

2. The Vandals, one of the ten Germanic tribes, sailed their

ships into the Roman fleet and set it on fire. This destroyed
almost the entire Roman navy and hastened the demise of the
empire.

3. Rome was certainly grieved at this loss.

4. Due to the unspeakable deeds perpetuated against

Rome by this barbarian tribe, even until this day, those involved
in malicious destruction are called “vandals”, and their acts are
referred to as “vandalism”.
3

5. Chittim referred to the coast and islands of the

Mediterranean.

6. From this region was the well-known city of Carthage on

the northern Mediterranean coast of Africa.

7. From Carthage, the Vandals, led by Genseric, were

among the four barbaric tribes that attacked the Western
Roman Empire, leading to its downfall in A.D. 476.

8. “And return, and have indignation against the holy

covenant.” The Germanic tribes of the north were tearing the
Roman Empire apart. And the emperor, Justinian was losing
control.

9. This verse is a key pivot point in Daniel 11 as it describes

the fall of the Western Roman Empire, and it sets up the
transition from Pagan to Papal Rome as we have seen in Daniel
2, 7, and 8.

10. Due to the growth of Christianity, the empire was half

Christian, and the only thing that seemed to be holding it
together was the church.

11. Despite the capital now being in Constantinople, the

people still looked to Rome for guidance, so they turned to the
bishop of Rome.
4

12. The bishop, with scepter in his hand took over the seat
of Caesar becoming both the spiritual and political head of the
empire. This united church and state.

13. In order for Papal Rome to conquer the Pagan tribes,

particularly the three that were “uprooted”, the Ostrogoths,
Vandals, and Heurli, it needed military strength so the acquiring
of military might was one of the key ways in which it had
“intelligence” with those who forsook the holy covenant.

14. A church has no power of its own, though with civil

power it can enforce dogmas through civil laws and military
might even if these dogmas were against the Scriptures.

15. The last part of verse 30 exposes Rome as having

“indignation against the holy covenant” and having
“intelligence with them that forsaken the holy covenant.”

16. As the Roman Catholic Church gained pre-eminence in

Pagan Rome, it assimilated paganism into the teachings of
Christianity, fulfilling the “intelligence with them that forsake
the holy covenant” prophecy.

17. In our time, we are near the end of Daniel 11 “The

prophecy of the eleventh chapter of Daniel has nearly reached
its complete fulfillment. Soon the scenes of trouble spoken of in
the prophecies will take place.”
5

Verse 31
31
And arms shall stand on his part, and they shall pollute the
sanctuary of strength, and shall take away the daily sacrifice,
and they shall place the abomination that maketh desolate.

Facts about the Above Verse:

From Pagan to Papal Rome

1. At the closing of 360 year prophecy, Rome, the king of

the north, moved its capital to Constantinople (in a nation
toward the south now known as Turkey) in A.D. 330.

2. Moving the capital weakened the kingdom, making

Rome more vulnerable to attacks from the barbarian tribes.

3. The Germanic tribes of the north were tearing the

Roman Empire apart, and the emperor, Justinian, was losing
control.

4. We saw the fall of the Western Roman Empire to the

barbaric tribes in A.D. 476 in verse 30. Therefore a new power
needed to replace Pagan Rome as the king of the north.

5. First we see that “arms shall stand” on the part of the

king of the north. The word for “arms” in this verse, based on
the Hebrew translation, means “mighty, power, or strength.”
6

6. The power that stood up with military force after the fall
of pagan Rome in 476 A.D. was papal Rome in A.D. 508.

7. Papal Rome became the new king of the north in Daniel

11.

8. So where exactly did it gain the military might to carry

out all the things prophesised that it will do? Let’s find out!

The Prophetic Union of Church and State

9. Though papal Rome didn’t have its own military it

received support from the different barbaric tribes starting with
Clovis, the king of the Franks in 508 A.D.

10. Clovis, the king of the Franks, “was the first barbarian
king to be converted to the Roman faith, to fight against the
enemies of the bishop of Rome”.

11. Clovis uprooted the Arian Visigoths from Gaul, and

started a kingdom of Church-State union in Paris in 508 A.D.
which would significantly mark the history of Europe for the
next 1,290 years.

12. As we reviewed already, Rome drove out the Ostrogoths,

the last rebelling barbaric tribe which opposed it in 538 A.D.
7

13. By 538 A.D. the three rebelling tribes; the Ostrogoths,

the Visigoths, and the Vandals had been eliminated.

14. With the opposition out of the way, Rome became

established as the fourth, and final world power before Christ’s
second coming. This of course we already touched on in Daniel
chapters 2, 7, and 8 in detail.

The Third and Final Abomination of Desolation

15. With Rome in full control there was nothing to stop her
from setting up the final abomination (see abomination of
desolation study guide for what this is) which, of course,
included her many false teachings, replacing God’s teachings
with the traditions of men, and her alterations of the times and
laws as Daniel predicted she would attempt to do. The majority
of the things she did can be found in “Daniel Chapter 7 Part 3
The Little Horn Speaking Blasphemy.”

16. “They shall pollute the sanctuary of strength.” In Daniel

8:11-13 we touched on two views about “the daily” and the
“sanctuary of strength”

17. Those who believe “the daily” is Christ’s ministry in

heaven believe “the sanctuary of strength” is God’s Sanctuary
that is being polluted by papal Rome.
8

18. The other view believes “the daily” is paganism which

then would mean “the sanctuary of strength” would represent
Rome.

19. Based on the translation in this text it is believed that

“the sanctuary of strength” is in reference to it being the pagan
sanctuary that was polluted through the force of arms of the
papacy.

20. In other words it is believed the papal Rome polluted or

destroyed the paganism of pagan Rome.

21. What is for sure, “the daily” was taken away and the
abomination of desolation was set up in 538 A.D.

22. The polluting of the “sanctuary of strength” may also

refer to those who were working for papal Rome against the
pagan and other opposing religions.

23. The removal of the seat of empire from Rome to

Constantinople contributing to Rome’s downfall would also fit
this prophecy. It would also parallel Daniel 8:11 and Revelation
13:2.

24. “They shall take away the daily sacrifice, and they shall
place the abomination that maketh desolate.” Here we see the
king of the north, papal Rome took away “the daily” which to
review is “worship” and set up the abomination of desolation.
9

25. Clovis’ union with Rome had provided the resources

necessary to take away “the daily” and set up the “abomination
of desolation” in A.D. 538.

26. The “abomination of desolation” was a system of

corruption surrounding God’s commandments but especially
the Sabbath. (Review the abomination of desolation study
guide for a refresher.)

27. This ensuing desolation was the church’s holy union with
Clovis’ unholy state power, and with it, the use of force against
all heretics who disagreed with the church.

The Prophecies

28. 538 A.D. when the “abomination of desolation” was

established is also significant because it is the start of the 1,260
year prophecy, a time when papal Rome exercised her authority
represented as the little horn in Daniel 7:8.

29. The union of church and state, as mentioned above is

prophetically important because two time prophecies start from
the date of its establishment in 508 A.D. (Daniel 12:11-12): the
1,290 and 1,335 days (or year) prophecies.

30. The 1,290 year prophecy started when Clovis helped

papal Rome get set up and established and ended when Rome
received the “deadly wound” in 1798. It covers the time when
10

Rome “plucked up” the three barbaric tribes as well as the dark
ages of Rome’s persecution and power.

31. During the Dark Ages Rome treated the people as

animals. Most couldn’t read or write. Bibles were chained to the
church and monastery walls. And the people were told they
were too ignorant to understand it.

32. The 1,335 year prophecy also began in 508 B.C. When
Clovis helped papal Rome get established and ended in 1843
when the time of the end began, the prophecies of Daniel and
Revelation were being unsealed, and the messages of the
cleansing of The Sanctuary and Jesus’ Second Coming were
being understood.

33. From 508 A.D. going forth for the next 1,290 years, the
state was controlled by the church. As a result, paganism was
taken away.

34. This setting up occurred when a church-state union was

formed in Paris between papal Rome and the Franks. As we
touched on, when the French leader Clovis converted from
paganism to Catholicism and provided military enforcement to
papal Rome.

35. This sequence of history was also spoken of in Daniel

8:12 in which “an host was given him against the daily sacrifice
by reason of transgression, and it cast down the truth to the
ground; and it practiced and it prospered.” The “host” was
11

Clovis’ army, and the “reason of transgression” is the same as

the abomination of desolation.

36. Rome, or the king of the north, received this power in

508 A.D. and would continue for the next 1,290 years, as seen in
Daniel 12:11 taking us to 1798.

37. The Justinian’s assistance became fully effective in A.D.

538, starting the 1,260 years of persecution described in Daniel
7:25. And Revelation 13:2 reminds us that the dragon, or Satan,
gave papal Rome “his power, and his seat, and great authority.”

38. This 1,260 year period was Satan’s opportunity to attack

God’s people through Rome’s authority. We will see what
Satan’s government and principals are in the following verses.

Verses 32 and 33
32
And such as do wickedly against the covenant shall he
corrupt by flatteries: but the people that do know their God
shall be strong, and do exploits. 33 And they that understand
among the people shall instruct many: yet they shall fall by the
sword, and by flame, by captivity, and by spoil, many days.

Facts about the above Verses:

1. The covenant spoken of here is seen in Hebrews 8:10-13,

and 10:16-17 as being God’s law being written in our hearts
and minds. This includes the seventh day Sabbath.
12

2. As we saw in Daniel 7:25 papal Rome changed times and

laws including changing the Sabbath from the seventh day to
the first day of the week.

3. One of Satan’s deceptions is the belief that we, as God’s

people, cannot keep His laws.

4. The Roman Government, under the authority of Satan,

openly trampled God’s law by His professed people.

5. Those who did “wickedly against the covenant“, were

people corrupted by papal Rome’s false worship.

6. Papal Rome sold indulgences for salvation, guaranteeing

eternal life despite the condition of the sinner, so long as the
people bought the indulgences for salvation.

7. People also corrupted themselves by following the

traditions of the papacy rather than God’s law.

8. The “people that do know their God” who “shall be

strong and do exploits” are in reference to God’s end time
remnant people, folks who, despite the pressures of Rome’s
false teachings cling to the Bible truths, keeping His true
Sabbaths and remaining faithful to God Almighty despite the
Roman persecution.
13

9. These remnant people taught others how to be faithful

to God during these dark times of Roman persecution.

10. Satan inspired Rome to persecute God’s people in four

ways: By the sword (murder), flame (burnt at the stake),
captivity (imprisonment), and spoil (Rome gave the victims’
property to those who killed them).

11. In Satan’s government, if one disagrees with his

leadership, he compels them by force, to either follow or pay
the consequences; this is entirely opposite the principles of
God’s government.

12. This persecution continued for “many days”. The term

“many days” refers to the 1,260 years of persecution of God’s
saints as seen in Daniel 7:25 which were from A.D. 538 to 1798.
The next two verses support this claim.

Verse 34 and 35
34
Now when they shall fall, they shall be holpen with a little
help: but many shall cleave to them with flatteries. 35 And some
of them of understanding shall fall, to try them, and to purge,
and to make them white, even to the time of the end: because
it is yet for a time appointed.

Facts about the above Verses:

14

1. Those who fell were God’s faithful who knew Him and
were strong in verse 32 and understood and instructed many in
verse 33. They were “holpen (or helped) with a little help.”

2. This help came from Martin Luther and the Protestant

Reformation. They exposed the errors of the papal church.

3. During the 1,260 years of persecution God preserved

these reformers to help further His cause of truth.

4. Verse 35 repeats that God’s people have understanding

as we saw in verse 33 and would be persecuted.

5. This persecution would occur for many days, or 1,260

years (see Daniel 7:25).

6. Verse 35 shows that persecution continued until the

times of the end which began in 1798 the end of the 1,260
years which was “the time appointed.”

7. The things papal Rome did, help reveal the true

character of Satan and the principles of his government.

Verse 36
36
And the king shall do according to his will; and he shall exalt
himself, and magnify himself above every god, and shall speak
marvellous things against the God of gods, and shall prosper till
15

the indignation be accomplished: for that that is determined

shall be done.

Facts about the above Verse:

1. The king of the north in Daniel 11:36 is still papal Rome.

2. Rome claims infallibility and attempts, with authority, to

change God’s law.

3. Rome exalts, magnifies, and speaks “marvellous words”

against our great Lord.

4. Papal Rome had the longest prospering dominion of

1,260 years of all the kingdoms in Daniel.

5. In Daniel 8:19 “indignation” is God’s indignation against

papal Rome’s sins of persecution which continued until 1798.

6. Daniel 8 reveals that the judgement for this indignation

began in 1844 at the end of the 2,300 day prophecy.

7. The end of the indignation will be at Christ’s second

coming.

Verse 37 to 38
16

37
Neither shall he regard the God of his fathers, nor the desire
of women, nor regard any god: for he shall magnify himself
above all. 38 But in his estate shall he honour the God of forces:
and a god whom his fathers knew not shall he honour with
gold, and silver, and with precious stones, and pleasant things.

Facts about the above Verses:

1. “Neither shall he regard the God of his fathers.” Rome

did not regard the Word of God. Instead the papacy created
traditions which the pope was said to be the Vicar of the Son of
God, basically God on earth.

2. The papacy also doesn’t allow the “desire of women”

among the priesthood, in which celibacy is required.

3. 1 Tim 4:1-3 proves that teaching celibacy in the papacy is

a doctrine “of devils”.

4. We already saw in Revelation 13:2 that Satan gave his

power, seat, and authority to papal Rome.

5. “Not regarding any god and magnifying himself above

all” is a repetition of verse 36.

6. “But in his estate shall he honour the God of forces”

remember that papal Rome used the power of force to get her
way.
17

7. In some translations “God of forces” is referred to as a

“god in his estate”. In the original text, god wasn’t capitalized as
it is in the King James Version.

8. Daniel 11:31 first denotes when the professed Christian

church began to use force to compel conscience.

9. Remember true Christianity follows Christ’s teachings of

love. Papal Rome follows a diabolic model, using force and
persecution.

10. Papal Rome also honours another god whom his fathers
did not know, whom he honours “with gold, and silver, and with
precious stones, and pleasant things.” This description of gold,
silver, and precious stones reminds us of the harlot
representing papal Rome in Revelation 17:4 where she is
“decked with gold and precious stones.”

11. Some believe this other “god” who the forefathers of the
Catholic Church did not know, is the deification of Mary, Jesus’
mother. The Catholic Church’s belief in Mary as a goddess had
exalted her to the level of blasphemy taking titles that only
Jesus bears such as Saviour, Advocate, and Mediator.

12. The Catholics believe that Mary is the “New Eve”

alongside the “New Adam” her son Jesus Christ.
18

Verse 39
39
Thus shall he do in the most strong holds with a strange god,
whom he shall acknowledge and increase with glory: and he
shall cause them to rule over many, and shall divide the land for
gain.

Facts about the above Verse:

1. “Do in the most strong holds” is an obscure passage

which has various translations.

2. Taking other translations into account, the most

reasonable wording would be “And he will work for the
strongest refuges with a foreign god.”

3. It is believed that the “foreign god” is the same as “a god

whom his fathers knew not.”

4. With the above statement in mind it can be safely

assumed that this too is in reference to Mary, Jesus’ mother
“whom he (the Catholics) shall acknowledge and increase with
glory” in other words, exalt to the level of a goddess and our
saviour which of course is blasphemy.

5. Regarding the phrase “he shall cause them to rule over

many” is in reference to millions of Rome’s devotees which are
held in bondage by these idols and images.
19

6. “And shall divide the land for gain” concerns the world
field. The Papacy beliefs are subject to its disposal as it
exercises vicarship of Jesus Christ and with this power claims
the right to divide the world among nations. This already
happened once in the 15th century when Pope Alexander VI
divided the New World between Spain and Portugal.

7. “Cause them to rule over many” refers to any force

operating in any country that would allow Rome to take
control. In exchange they offer their alliance.

8. The next, and final study guide of chapter 11 brings us to

present time and concerns us today so be sure not to miss it!
