SIMPLE PRESENT!

So, for the past two days, we have been checking about the simple present. But
now, I’ll give more detailed information about this tense, its structure and how
we conjugate verbs. (Entonces, durante los últimos dos días, hemos estado repasando el
presente simple. Pero ahora, daré información más detallada sobre este tiempo, su estructura
y cómo conjugamos los verbos.)

The simple present tense in English is used to describe an action that is regular,
true or normal. (El presente simple en inglés se utiliza para describir una acción que es
regular, verdadera o normal.)

We use the present tense:

1. For repeated or regular actions in the present time period. (Para acciones
repetidas o regulares en el presente.)

• I take the train to the office. (Tomo el tren a la oficina.)


• The train to Berlin leaves every hour. (El tren a Berlín sale cada hora.)

2. For facts. (para hechos)

• The President of the USA lives in The White House. (El presidente de los
Estados Unidos vive en la Casa Blanca.)
• A dog has four legs. (Un perro tiene cuatro patas)
3. For habits. (para hábitos)

• I get up early every day. (Me levanto temprano todos los días.)
• Carol brushes her teeth twice a day. (Carol se cepilla los dientes dos veces al
día.)

Verb Conjugation & Spelling

We form the present tense using the base form of the infinitive (without the TO).
(Formamos el presente usando la forma base del infinitivo (sin el "TO").)

In general, in the third person we add 'S' in the third person. (Por lo general, en
tercera persona, añadimos "S".)

The spelling for the verb in the third person differs depending on the ending of
that verb: (La ortografía del verbo en tercera persona difiere dependiendo de la terminación

1. For verbs that end in -O, -CH, -SH, -SS, -X, or -Z we add -ES in the third
person. (para verbos terminados en -O, -CH, -SH, -SS, -X, o –Z, añadimos -ES en la tercera
persona)

• go – goes
• catch – catches
• wash – washes
• kiss – kisses
• fix – fixes
• buzz – buzzes

2. For verbs that end in a consonant + Y, we remove the Y and add -IES. (para
verbos que terminan en consonante + Y, removemos la Y y añadimos -IES)

• marry – marries
• study – studies
• carry – carries
• worry – worries

NOTE: For verbs that end in a vowel + Y, we just add -S. (para verbos que terminan
en vocal + Y, añadimos -S)

• play – plays
• enjoy – enjoys
• say – says

PAST SIMPLE!

Past Simple Tense

The past simple is used to talk about completed actions or events that happened
at a specific time in the past. (El pasado simple se utiliza para hablar de acciones o eventos
completados que ocurrieron en un momento específico en el pasado.)

• Usage:
o Actions completed in the past (acciones completadas en el pasado)
E.g.: yesterday, last year, in 2020. (ayer, el año pasado, en 2020)
o A series of actions in the past. (una serie de acciones en el pasado)
o Habits or repeated actions in the past. (Hábitos o acciones repetidas en
el pasado.)
• Structure:
o Affirmative: Subject + past form of the verb (regular or irregular)
She visited the museum.
o Negative: Subject + did not + base form of the verb
They did not play football.
o Question: Did + subject + base form of the verb
Did you watch the movie?

Examples:
I traveled to Quito last weekend.

Did they live in Spain?

They didn’t drive to work.

It rained last night.

Regular and Irregular Verbs

• Regular Verbs: These form the past simple by adding -ed to the base verb.
(los verbos regulares se forman al añadir -ed al verbo base)
Examples: play → played, walk → walked
• Irregular Verbs: These have unique past forms that don’t follow a set
rule. (Estos tienen formas pasadas únicas que no siguen una regla
establecida.
Examples: go → went, eat → ate, have → had
Regular verbs follow a pattern, while irregular verbs must be memorized.
