Medicines and Health Products
Medicine is the science or practice of diagnosis, treatment and prevention of disease.
It is derived from the Latin ars medicina which means “the art of healing”. Medicine encompasses
a variety of dynamic health care practices that maintain and restore health by the prevention and
treatment of illness.
The teacher will ask the students to read again the text but by group.
The teacher will ask questions:
1. Which language is medicine derived from?
2. How does medicine help us people?
3. Do you know certain medicine and what is it for?
4. Have you taken medicine recently? Why did you take medicine?
5. How did you get that medicine?
D. Presenting examples/Instances of the
new lesson The teacher will show charts about types and uses of Medicine.
-The teacher will tell the students:
Today, we will learn types of medicine, medicine that we can buy over the counter and
medicine that needs prescription from a doctor.
Over the Counter Medicine
● These are the medicines that are intended for minor ailments
such as indigestion, headaches or coughing
● It does not require doctor’s prescription.
● They can be handed down to any friend, co-worker, or family member
suffering the same ailment as long
as the proper instructions are followed.
● Most over-the-counter medicines are inexpensive and can be bought
cheaply than the branded ones.
Prescription Medicine
● Bought at a pharmacy
• It is intended to treat major ailments such a as diabetes, cancer or heart disease.
• Licensed medical professionalXs and qualified individuals can order prescription
medicines for their patients and only professional pharmacist can fill their orders.
• These medicines are intended for specific patients and cannot be legally
shared with others.
• It is usually formulated to therapeutically provide aggressive
treatment to patients.
The teacher will ask:
1. What are the 2 types of medicine?
2. How can you describe minor ailments?
3. What type of medicine is for minor ailments?
4. How can you describe major ailments?
5. What type of medicine is for major ailments?
6. Can you take medicine as much as you want to heal from sickness?
