1 Colour of salts. White Absence of Cu2+, Ni2+,
Fe2+, Mn2+, Fe3+ salts
2 Solubility in dilute HCl
To a little amount of salt add soluble Pb2+ absent
dilute HCl.
3 Action with dilute H2SO4
To a little amount of the salt add a No reaction. Absence of CO32-
few drops of dilute H2SO4 and absence, SO32-, S2-
warm if necessary. and NO2-.
4 Ammonium molybdate test:-
To a little amount of salt add No Canary yellow ppt Absence of
conc. HNO3 and boil and add phosphate.

solution.
5 Barium chloride test:-
To a little amount of salt add No white ppt Absence of sulphate
dilute HCl and BaCl2 to solution. SO42-
6 Conc. Sulphuric acid test:-
To a little amount of the given salt Colourless vapours - Presence of CH3COO-
in the test tube add a few drops of CH3COOH with vinegar
conc. H2SO4 and heat. smell.
7 Flame test:-
To a little amount of the salt taken No characteristic coloured Absence of Cu2+,
in a watch glass add a few drops flame Ca2+, Sr2+, Ba2+ salts.
of conc. HCl and make a paste.
Introduce this paste into the flame
with a glass rod.
II.GROUP SEPARATION
The original solution is prepared with water
S.No EXPERIMENT OBSERVATION INFERENCE
1 To a little amount of salt add No white ppt. Absence of
dil.HCl Pb2+.[group 1]
2 To the above solution pass H2S No characteristic coloured Absence of Cu2+ and
gas [yellow ammonium ppt. Cd2+
sulphide solution]
[group 2]
3 Boil to expel H2S gas and add No characteristic coloured Absence of Al 3+, Fe2+,
NH4Cl and NH4OH solutions. ppt. Fe3+. [ group 3].
4 To the above solution pass H2S No characteristic coloured Absence of Zn2+,
gas. ppt. Ni2+, Mn2+. [group
4].
5 Boil to expel H2S gas and add No white ppt. Absence of
NH4Cl ,and NH4OH and Ca2+,Ba2+ Sr2+ salts.
(NH4)2CO3 solution. [group 5].
6 To the salt solution add NH4Cl, No white ppt.
NH4OH and Na2HPO4 Absence of Mg2+.
(disodium hydrogen phosphate) [group 6].
solution
7 To a part of the solution add Reddish brown ppt. Presence of NH4+.
Nessler’s reagent followed by
Sodium hydroxide solution. [group 7 or group
zero].
III.CONFIRMATORY TEST FOR ACID RADICAL - CH3COO -
Ester test:-
Treat a pinch of the given salt Fruity smell. Presence of CH3COO -
with conc. H2SO4 and add confirmed.
ethyl alcohol. Heat the
mixture and smell the
vapours.
IV.CONFIRMATORY TESTS FOR BASIC RADICAL- NH4+
To a part of the solution add Reddish brown ppt. Presence of NH4+.
Nessler’s reagent followed by
Sodium hydroxide solution.
V.RESULT
The given simple salt was analysed systematically and it was found that the –
1.Acid radical is CH3COO -
2.Basic radical is NH4+
3.Simple salt is Ammonium acetate
