CHAPTER 1
A. Overview or Background of the Study
Study habits are important elements towards achieving students’
academic goals. It is against this backdrop that establishing such patterns
early in the life of a student can greatly enhance his or her ability to reach
the set objectives. Being exposed to good study habits is like having a guide
for navigating one’s academic journey effectively. This guiding informs the
structuring of study habits aimed at aligning with individual learning styles.
Hence, students must be informed about effective study habits
because such will surely maximize their learning potential. According to
Aristotle as cited by Grohol (2020) habit is what individuals repeatedly do.
Anything they practice long enough becomes ingrained into the system and
becomes a habit. Having good habits will lead to an effective life while the
bad may lead to failures. Habits indicate the personality of an individual. In
education, study habits mean usual or regular learner’s ways of exercising
and practicing their abilities for learning. These can be extremely useful, and
it would be impossible to run one’s lives without them.
Study habits are the behaviors used when preparing for tests or
learning academic materials. It implies to how one studies. Study habit is a
very important characteristic of all human beings who are ‘being educated’
and ‘are educated’. It has long reached effects deep into the lives of
individuals, and by cumulative and interactive effects in the society (Grohol,
2020).
However, even when students possess knowledge of study habits
beneficial to academic work, they may not practice them (Jairam, 2019).
Study habits also show the degree to which the student is involved in regular
acts of studies and the acts of studies are characterized by regular studying
schedule like frequency of studying sessions, reviews of material, etc. by
taking place in an environment which is helpful to studying (Singh, 2019).
In addition, Guaia et al. (2020) indicated that motivation is the most
important aspect in achieving academic success. It involves both internal and
external factors that drive people to put forth a lot of effort to accomplish a
goal or to remain constantly interested in and dedicated to a line of work, a
position, or a subject. This has a significant effect on almost every aspect of
human behavior. A person’s decision will be influenced by their motivation.
Motivation cannot be observed in action, just like intelligence. Observing
someone's behavior is the only method to learn their motivations.
Participation in class and positive attitude both at home and at school can
both benefit a student.
Study habits are the most important predictors of students’ academic
performance. Students must learn and apply study skills to organize and
learn a large amount of information. Evidence suggests that those who lack
study strategy knowledge do not achieve effective and stable learning, and,
thus, do not perform well academically (Jafari et al., 2019).
Relucio (2019) conducted a study titled, "Factors Affecting the Study
Habits of Grade Eleven Students in One National High School in Pangasinan,
Philippines.” He found out that students hardly took notes and they
occasionally read their lessons. The students' dismal academic performance
was, in general, a result of their bad study habits.
In the context of Itawes National Agricultural and Technical School, most
of the Grade 12 students have different study habits. During the non-
structured interview, 34% or 30 out of 87 students said that they have their
own preferred study habits. Others would affirm that they possess poor study
habits will often lead to their poor performance at school.
It is in this premise that the researchers conducted a study titled,
“Extent of Implementation of the Different Study Habits Among Grade 12
Students at Itawes National Agricultural and Technical School,” for the school
year 2024-2025. Moreover, this study identified challenges and problems
encountered by the participants regarding their study habits. A plan for
action was crafted to improve study habits of the participants.
