Dani Worksheet 5

The document provides explanations of key networking concepts including Network Interface Cards (NICs), hubs, switches, and firewalls. A NIC connects a computer to a network, while a hub broadcasts data to all devices and a switch forwards data only to intended recipients. Firewalls are essential for network security, acting as barriers to prevent unauthorized access and filter malicious traffic.

1. Answer the following questions.

a) What is a Network Interface Card (NIC)?

ans:A Network Interface Card (NIC) is a hardware component, typically a circuit board or chip, installed
on a computer to enable it to connect to a network. It provides the computer with a dedicated, full-time
connection to the network and implements the necessary physical layer circuitry for communication
with data link layer standards such as Ethernet or Wi-Fi. The NIC acts as an interface between the
computer and the data network, facilitating the transmission of data packets and controlling the flow of
data on the network.

b) What is the difference between a hub and a switch?

ans:A hub is a basic networking device that connects multiple devices in a network, but it operates at the
physical layer of the OSI model and broadcasts data to all connected devices. A switch, on the other
hand, is a more intelligent device that operates at the data link layer of the OSI model and forwards data
only to the intended recipient based on MAC addresses. Switches are more efficient than hubs as they
reduce unnecessary traffic on the network.

c) What is the primary purpose of using a firewall in a network

ans:The primary purpose of using a firewall in a network is to secure the network from cyberattacks.
Firewalls act as a barrier between your internal network and external networks, such as the internet, to
prevent unauthorized access and filter out malicious traffic. By monitoring and controlling incoming and
outgoing network traffic based on predetermined security rules, firewalls help protect sensitive data,
systems, and resources from various threats like malware, hackers, phishing attempts, and other cyber
threats. In essence, firewalls play a crucial role in enhancing network security by enforcing access control
policies and safeguarding against potential security breaches.
