A notice is a formal means of communication. The purpose of a notice is to announce or


display information to a specific group of people. Notices are generally meant to be pinned
up on specific display boards whether in schools or in public places. Notices issued by the
government appear in newspapers.

Important tips:

 A well-written notice must inform the readers about the five Ws:

1. What is going to happen, (that is, the event)


2. Where it will take place, (that is, the venue)
3. When it will take place (that is, the date and time)
4. Who can apply or is eligible for it
5. Whom to contact or apply to (that is, the issuing authority)

 The language used should be formal.


 The sentences should be short and grammatically accurate.
 Use passive voice as far as possible.
 Only the most important points should be written.
 Standard abbreviations are allowed.
 Present your notices in a box.
 Increase the visual appeal of your notice by using bold letters, etc.
 The ideal length of notice is 50 words (only the words in the body of the notice are
counted).

Sample notices:

1. You are the head prefect of Pannala National School, Pannala. You have been asked to
write a notice regarding a sports kit bag found on the school playground.
Use about 40 – 50 words. Invent necessary details.
