Q1. Explain how the Northern Mountain Ranges influence the
river system of Pakistan.
[6 marks]
Try to include aspects such as source of rivers, glacier melt,
rainfall patterns, and seasonal flow.
Ans. The Northern Mountain Ranges play a very important role in the river system
of Pakistan. Most of the major rivers in Pakistan, like the Indus, originate from these
mountain ranges. These mountains are have many glaciers, which are large masses of
ice. When the temperature rises in the summer, the glaciers melt and add a huge
amount of water to the rivers, especially during the warmer months. This causes the
rivers to swell and flow with great speed and force and cause the water table to rise.
The Northern Mountains also receive a good amount of rainfall, especially during the
monsoon season. This rainwater further increases the flow of rivers. Because of
glacier melting and seasonal rain, the rivers have a strong flow in the summer but a
lower flow in the winter. In short, the Northern Mountain Ranges provide the source
of the rivers, provide them with water from the glacier melt, increase their flow
through rainfall, and cause seasonal changes in the water table levels.

opportunities and challenges for Pakistan?

However natural disasters such as land sliding or avalanches kill many people and
cause floods in the monsoon seasons and destroys many houses, kills people and
