CHAPTER 8: Electricity and Circuits

______________________________________________________________________________

Important terms:

1) Electric circuit: A continuous path through which electric current flows is called an electric
circuit. Electric current flows from positive terminal to negative terminal.

2) Cell: Cell is a source of electric current. It has two terminals: positive and negative. The
metallic cap is the positive terminal and the metallic plate ( base) is the negative terminal.

3) Battery: Combination of two or more cells is called battery.

4) Components of a circuit: The components that are used in a circuit are wires, cells, battery,
switch , bulb or other electrical appliances.

5) Different types of electric cells:

a) Primary cells: These cells can be used only once. They can no longer be used once
discharged.
b) Secondary cells: They can be recharged once drained off. Example: mobile battery,
laptop battery.
c) Solar cells : They use sunlight to produce electricity.

6) Conditions required for electric current to flow:

a) Source or device to produce electric current. Eg: cell, battery, plug point.

b) Wire made up of metals like copper which allow electric current to pass through.

c) Electrical appliances like bulb.

Answer the following questions:

Q1. What do you mean by an Open circuit?

Ans1. An open circuit is a path of electricity which is broken at some point. So the switch is in ‘off’
position . Electrical appliances attached will not work as current does not flow in an open circuit.

____________________________________________________________________________

Q2. What is a Closed circuit?

Ans2. Closed circuit is an unbroken path through which electric current flows. The switch is in ‘on’
position and electrical appliances will work.

Q3. Explain the structure of the bulb with the help of a diagram.

Diagram ( to be drawn on blank page)

Ans 3. Bulb has following parts:

a) A bulb consists of filament made up of tungsten.

b) The filament is supported by two thick wires.
c) It has a glass case.
d) Bulb contains inert ( inactive or non reactive) gas that prevents filament from being heated
on passage of electric current.
e) The base of the bulb and the metal tip at the centre of the base are the two terminals.

Q4. Explain the structure of torch through the diagram.

Diagram ( to be drawn on blank page)

(You can refer Fig. 12.11 Inside view of a torch on pg.121 also)

Ans 4. A torch contains a simple electric circuit. In a torch, two (or more) cells are connected to a
torch bulb through a sliding switch. A torch has the outer body made up of plastic and a
reflector which redirect the light in such a way that we can get a beam of light. The two cells in a
torch have to be joined correctly. The positive terminal of one cell is always kept in contact with the
negative terminal of the other cell. When switched on, a metal strip moves beneath the switch and
bulb glows, giving light and heat.

Q5 . What is the purpose of using an electric switch? Name some electrical gadgets that
have switches built into them.

Ans. The purpose of electric switch is to complete or break the circuit. Some gadgets that have
switches built in them are fans, microwave oven, fridge, coolers and electric cookers.

Q6. What is an electric circuit? Name its different components and draw a labelled diagram
of a circuit.
Answer:

An electric circuit is a path along which an electric current flows. It is made up of various electrical
components which are discussed below:

1. There is a cell or a battery in the circuit that is used as a source of electric current.
2. There is an electric switch that is used to open or close the circuit. It is also called ‘key’. When
the switch is ‘on’, the current flows in the circuit and when it is ‘off, the current does not flow.
3. A bulb is connected to the circuit to confirm the flow of current. When it lights up, the circuit is
said to be complete, i.e., current is flowing. On the other hand, when the bulb does not glow,
the circuit is said to be incomplete, i.e., current is not flowing.
4. The most important component of the circuit is the connecting wire which connect all the
components of the circuit to make the current flow.

Q7 Mention different safety measures and precautions while using electricity and electrical
appliances.

Ans . We must adopt some safety measures and take precautions discussed below:

1. Never touch electrical switches or gadgets when your body is wet.

2. If you need to operate or repair any electrical appliances, wear rubber hand gloves and stand
on a dry wooden or plastic base.
3. Never play with electric sockets or wires.
4. In case of short circuit or a spark in a switch, put the main switch off immediately with the help
of a plastic or wooden stick.
5. In case of fire in electric wires, never use water to extinguish it. First switch off the mains, then
use dry sand to extinguish the fire.

Q8. Differentiate between conductors and insulators?

Ans4. Conductors Insulators

1. The materials which allow electric current to 1. The materials which do not allow

pass through them are called conductors. electric current to pass through them.

2. Examples: Iron, copper, aluminum 2. Examples: Plastic, wood, paper,

thermocol

Q9. Draw the diagram of closed and open circuit .( blank side of N.B)

OPEN CIRCUIT CLOSED CIRCUIT

Q10 Why we are advised not to touch electric appliances and switches with wet
hands?
AnsWater is a good conductor of electricity and if our hands are wet it can pass to us
quickly giving us an electric shock.

Q11. Why should an electrician wear rubber gloves while repairing an electric
switch at your home? Explain.

Ans . Rubber gloves are insulators and protect the electrician from electric shock
while working with electrical appliances.
