VW Touran 2.
0 TDI PD (BMM) - Oil Pump Chain Replacement Guide
The BMM engine uses a chain to drive the oil pump from the crankshaft via a balance shaft module.
Although VW lists it as a lifetime component, real-world experience shows the chain and tensioner should
be replaced preventively around 200,000 km to avoid catastrophic oil pump failure.
1. Symptoms of oil pump chain wear
- Rattling or metallic noise from lower front of engine (especially at idle).
- Low oil pressure warning light (late stage, stop engine immediately).
- Engine vibration changes due to balance shaft timing shifting.
2. Recommended parts
- Oil pump drive chain.
- Chain tensioner.
- Balance shaft/oil pump sprockets (if teeth are worn).
- Oil pan gasket/sealant.
- Fresh engine oil & filter.
- New crankshaft bolt (stretch bolt, single use).
3. Required tools
- Engine support bar or hoist (if removing engine mount for clearance).
- Full socket set including torque wrench.
- VW-specific crankshaft locking tool.
- Sealant for oil pan (per VW spec).
- Oil drain pan.
4. Procedure overview
■ Disconnect battery negative terminal.
■ Drain engine oil.
■ Remove lower engine covers.
■ Remove ancillary belts and crankshaft pulley.
■ Support engine, remove engine mount if required.
■ Remove oil pan (clean mating surfaces).
■ Lock crankshaft at TDC using VW locking tool.
■ Remove balance shaft/oil pump module cover.
■ Release tensioner and remove chain.
■ Install new chain and tensioner, align timing marks.
■ Torque crankshaft bolt to VW spec (stretch bolt procedure).
■ Refit oil pan with new sealant, torque evenly.
■ Refill with fresh oil and replace filter.
■ Start engine and check for leaks and abnormal noise.
5. Key torque specifications (BMM)
- Crankshaft pulley bolts: 10 Nm + 90°
- Crankshaft center bolt: 150 Nm + 180° (replace bolt)
- Oil pan bolts: 15 Nm
- Balance shaft module bolts: 20 Nm
