Practical Lab Task

Task 2:
Title:

Data Analysis and Visualization of Student Academic Performance using a Spreadsheet

Aim:

To create a spreadsheet to calculate the total marks, percentage, and grade of students, and
to visualize the class performance using a suitable chart.

Algorithm (Step-by-Step Procedure):

1. Launch Microsoft Excel or Google Sheets.

2. Create Headers: In the first row (Row 1), create the following column headers:

o A1: Roll No

o B1: Student Name

o C1: Marks 1 (e.g., out of 100)

o D1: Marks 2 (e.g., out of 100)

o E1: Marks 3 (e.g., out of 100)

o F1: Total Marks

o G1: Percentage

o H1: Grade

3. Enter Sample Data: Enter the data for at least 5 students under the Roll No, Student
Name, Marks 1, Marks 2, and Marks 3 columns.

4. Calculate Total Marks:

o In cell F2, enter the formula: =SUM(C2:E2)

o Use the fill handle (a small square at the bottom-right corner of the cell) to
drag this formula down to apply it to all students.

5. Calculate Percentage:

o In cell G2, enter the formula: =(F2 / 300) * 100 (Assuming total marks for 3
subjects is 300).

o Format this cell to show numbers with decimal places (e.g., 0 or 2).

o Drag the formula down for all students.

6. Assign Grade (Using IF function):

o In cell H2, enter a nested IF formula. For example:

=IF(G2>=90, "A", IF(G2>=80, "B", IF(G2>=70, "C", IF(G2>=60, "D", "F"))))

o This formula assigns a grade based on the percentage.

o Drag the formula down for all students.

7. Visualize the Data:

o Select the cells containing the Student Name (B2:B6) and their
corresponding Percentage (G2:G6).

o Go to the Insert menu and select a Column Chart or a Bar Chart.

o Add a Chart Title (e.g., "Student Performance Analysis") and Axis Titles.

8. Save your spreadsheet file.

Sample Output (Screenshot Description):

Your final spreadsheet should look similar to this:

A B C D E F G H

Roll Student Marks Marks Marks Total

1 Percentage Grade
No Name 1 2 3 Marks

2 101 Alice 85 92 78 255 85.0 B

3 102 Bob 92 88 95 275 91.7 A

4 103 Charlie 72 65 80 217 72.3 C

5 104 Diana 68 74 71 213 71.0 C

6 105 Evan 45 50 52 147 49.0 F

Next to this table, there should be a Column Chart showing the names of the students on
the X-axis and their percentages on the Y-axis, with each student having a column
representing their score.

Result:

The student academic performance data was successfully entered into the spreadsheet. This
lab task demonstrated the practical application of spreadsheets for data processing and
visualization.
