Additional Activities (p.10)
In the research study of a biologist, there are 30 bacteria which have been recorded at t = 0.
Suppose that the bacteria double in every 100 hours, present an exponential model for the
bacteria as a function of t. Write your complete solution in the box.
t (hours) 0 100 200 300 400
bacteria 30 60 120 240 480
In t hours, there are 2t doubling periods. (For example, after 400 hours, the population has
doubled 4 times.) The initial value is 30, so the population P at time t is given by
𝑃(𝑡) = (30)(22𝑡 )
This is an acceptable response, but in calculus and all advanced mathematics and science,
the natural exponential base, e, is always used. The problem is done using the natural
exponential growth function
𝑃(𝑡) = 𝑃0 𝑒 𝑟𝑡
Given that the initial population is 30 bacteria. So 𝑃0 = 30 and
𝑃(𝑡) = 30𝑒 𝑟𝑡
After 100 hours, there are 60 bacteria. Substituting into the function, we get
𝑃(𝑡) = 30𝑒 𝑟𝑡

60 = 30𝑒 𝑟(1)
60 = 30𝑒 𝑟
2 = 𝑒𝑟
Using the natural logarithm to solve for r
ln(2) = ln(𝑒 𝑟 )
ln(2) = (𝑟) ln(𝑒)
ln(2) = 𝑟
0.6931 ≈ 𝑟
Thus, the function 𝑃(𝑡) = 30𝑒 0.6931𝑡 gives the number of bacteria after t hours.
