IV. PROCEDURES
TEACHER’S ACTIVITY

Preliminary Activities
5 minutes The teacher will start the day by greeting the students and giving them
enough time to fix their surroundings to be ready for today’s class.
A. Greetings

3 minute The teacher will check the attendance by calling the students’ surname
B. Checking of Attendance one by one.

2 minute The teacher will ask the students to pass their assignment.
C. Checking of Assignments

5 minutes The teacher will ask the students about the topic they discussed
D. Reviewing the previous lesson yesterday.
or presenting the new lesson

5 minutes The teacher will group the students into three to play a game
before the discussion. Each group should come up with the a
team name.

WHERE AM I BELONG?
Mechanics:
1. The teacher will show a pictures of an animals.
2. Whoever shout their team name first have the chance to
answer the showed picture.
3. After answering, the students should paste the picture on the
board where it belongs: X-Men, Justice League, and Avengers
4. If the students have the wrong answer, other team can steal the
chance to answer the picture.

The group that collects a lot of points will get an additional 5

points on their quiz.

Below are some objects:

E. Motivation

5 minutes F. Initial Activities After the group activity, the teacher will proceed to make the
students answer the following individually.

Directions: Group and label the objects below according to their

characteristics. Write it on your 1/4 sheet of paper.
5 minutes G. Analysis The teacher will proceed to ask the questions:

1. What have you discovered?

2. How did you group the objects?
3. Why did you group the object as such?
10 minutes H. Abstraction Lesson 1: Sets

The groups are called sets. Set maybe thought as a collection of

objects.

In mathematics, set is a well-defined group or collection of

objects that share common characteristics. The objects contained
in the set are called elements.

Examples:
 A set of students
 A set of chairs
 A set of classrooms

A set can be named using capital letters like A, B, C, D,…Z and

we use braces { } to group the elements of set separated by
commas.

If a set contains many elements, we often use three dots, …,

called ellipsis.

*Note: In listing the elements of the set, each distinct element is

listed once and the order of the element does not matter.

CHARACTERISTICS OF SETS
1. Well-defined Sets - a collection of objects that is clearly
defined so that it is easy to tell what is and is not in the set.
2. Not well-defined Sets - if its conditions are unclear,
subjective, or incomplete.

Examples of well-defined sets

1. The set of primary colors
M = {red, yellow, blue}

2. The set of all even numbers.

E = { 2, 4, 6,…}

3. The set of all multiples of 5.

Y = {5, 10, 15, …}

4. The set of letter in the word “arrange”.

O = {a,r,n,g,e}
Examples of not well-defined sets
1. The set of famous dancers.
2. The set of punctual students in your class.
3. The set of honest people

10 minutes I. Application After the discussion, the teacher will provide a task for the 3
groups.

Directions: The group will create 5 examples of well-defined

and not well defined sets. Write it in one whole sheet of paper
and discuss it on the front.

5 minutes J. Generalization The teacher will ask the students:

1. What is a set?
2. What are the 2 characteristics of sets?
3. Why do you think it is important to know the differences
between well-defined and not well defined sets?
4. Do you think we can use sets in real life?
5. How will you apply sets in real life?
5 minutes K. Evaluation QUIZ #1

Directions: State whether each of the following sets is well-

defined or not. If the answer is well-defined, list the elements of
a set. If not, write NOT WELL-DEFINED.

1. The set of young politicians.

2. The set of types of matter.
3. The set of versatile actress.
4. The set of all oceans of the earth.
5. The set of months containing 31 days.
6. The set of tasty food.
7. The set of planets in our solar system.
8. The set of durable bags.
9. The set of consonants in the English Alphabet
10. The set of even counting numbers.

Key answers:
1. Not well-defined
2. A = {solid, liquid, gas, plasma}
3. Not well-defined
4. B = {Atlantic, Pacific, Indian, Southern, Arctic}
5. C = {January, March, May, July, August, October, December}
6. Not well-defined
7. D = {Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus,
Neptune}
