Chapter 3 C The Nano World

Nanotechnology can enable sensors to detect very small amounts of chemical vapors using detecting elements like carbon nanotubes, zinc oxide nanowires, or palladium nanoparticles. This allows detection of very low chemical vapor concentrations. Nanotechnology is also being used in several applications to improve the environment, such as cleaning up pollution, improving manufacturing methods to reduce new pollution, and making alternative energy sources more cost effective. One of the foremost tools for imaging and manipulating matter at the nanoscale is the atomic force microscope, which has been used to image a platinum electrode measuring one hundredth of a nanometer.

CHAPTER 3 C

THE NANO WORLD

Nanotechnology  can enable sensors to
detect very small amounts of chemical
vapors. Various types of detecting
elements, such as carbon nanotubes,
zinc oxide nanowires or palladium
nanoparticles can be used
in nanotechnology-based sensors. ...

This allows the detection of a very low

concentration of chemical vapors.
Nanotechnology is being used in several
applications to improve the
environment.

 This includes cleaning up existing

pollution, improving manufacturing
methods to reduce the generation of
new pollution, and making alternative
energy sources more cost effective.
INTRODUCTION TO NANOTECHNOLOGY –
IMAGES

There is a large number of absolutely amazing

images out there. We picked some of the
most spectacular for you:
Developing new instruments to be able to
"see" at the nanoscale is a research field in
itself. Shown here is the tip of an atomic force
microscope (AFM), one of the foremost tools
for imaging, measuring and manipulating
matter at the nanoscale. Here, a platinum
electrode measuring one hundredth of a
nanometer has been deposited on the tip of
this pyramid shaped AFM tip via focused ion
beam (FIB) deposition. (Image: C. Menozzi,

completely etched. It’s a reminder that
nanoscale research can have
unpredicted consequences at a high
level. (Image: Fanny Beron, École

 Nanotechnology  is the science of
materials at the molecular or subatomic
level. ...

 Rich countries are investing heavily in

nanotechnology for health.

 The first generation of cancer drugs

delivered via nanoparticles, for example,
has already been approved by the US
Food and Drug Administration (FDA).
 HEINRICH ROHRER- Father of Nanotechnology
Born in Switzerland
 HEINRICH ROHRER, winner of the 1986 Nobel Prize in

Physics.

 Rohrer is widely regarded as one of the founding

scientists of the nanotechnology field.

 In his Nobel Prize announcement, the Nobel Prize

committee called out “his fundamental work in
electron optics and for the design of the first electron
microscope.”

 The electron microscope is what let scientists see

viruses and IBM make this little animation.
THE FIRST SACANNING TUNNELING MICROSCOPE

 Nanotechnology encompasses science,
engineering, and technology at the
nanoscale, which is about 1 to 100
nanometers.

 Just how small is that?

 A nanometer is one-billionth of a meter. For

reference, a sheet of paper is about 100,000
nanometers thick.
