Precalculus Conic Sections Review Guide

This document appears to be a review for a precalculus exam covering topics like conic sections (ellipses, hyperbolas, parabolas), their key properties and equations. It includes problems involving finding features of conic section equations like vertices, foci, axes, as well as determining if equations represent specific types of conic sections or other curves. There are also word problems applying conic section concepts to real world scenarios like suspension bridges and searchlights.

1ST QUARTER - PRECALCULUS

For numbers 1 - 4. Given the equation of ellipse :
1. Find the vertex.
2. Find the foci.
3. Find the endpoints of the minor axis.
4. Where is the major axis located?
For numbers 5 - 7. Given this hyperbola equation
5. Find one of the vertices.
6. Find one of the foci.
7. What is the length of transverse axis?
8. A line outside the ellipse and parallel to the minor axis.
9. A device used to treat kidney and gallstones w/o open surgery.
10. A pair of opposite sides of the rectangle passes through the vertices.
11. A pair of lines that is closely related to but not part of the hyperbola. It
intersects the center of the hyperbola.
12. The fixed points of the ellipse.
13. The constant ratio of a conic section.
14. A set of all points such that the sum of its distances from two fixed points is
constant.
15. The axis that contains the foci, center and the vertices of the hyperbola.
III. Determine whether each equation represents a circle, a point, or has no
graph .
16.

CIRCLE

a. standard equation: _______________

b. center: _________
c. radius: _________
General Form Type of Conic Section Standard Form

The center of the circle is at (- 2, -4) and is tangent to x-axis. D the equation
in standard form and general form
1. The two towers of a suspension bridge are 300 feet apart and extend 120
feet above the road surface. If the cable is tangent to the road at the center of
the bridge, find the height of the cable above the road a) at 100 feet, and b) at
100 feet from the center of the bridge.
2. If a baseball that is hit follows a parabolic path 160 feet wide at the base
and 50 feet high at the center, find the equation of a parabola that gives the
path of the baseball. Let the origin be the point of departure of the ball.
3. A searchlight has a parabolic reflector (has a cross section that forms a
“bowl”).  The parabolic “bowl” is 24 inches wide from rim to rim and 10
inches deep.  The filament of the light bulb is located at the focus. How far
from the vertex is the filament of the light bulb?
