Student Physics Project Report

Kunal submitted a project on a battery operated simple pendulum to his teacher Mr. Mukesh. He thanked his teacher and principal for the opportunity. The project covered topics like simple pendulums, how battery operated pendulums work, an experiment to determine acceleration due to gravity using a pendulum, observations recorded from the experiment, results, conclusions, and sources of error. The experiment found the acceleration due to gravity to be 10.02 m/s2 for one pendulum length and 10.61 m/s2 for a longer length, verifying the relationship between pendulum length and period.

ACKNOWLEDGEMENT
I would like to express my special thanks of gratitude to
my class teacher, as well as our principal who gave me
the golden opportunity to do this wonderful project on
the topic battery operated simple pendulam,
which also helped me in doing a lot of Research and I
came to know about so many new things I am really
thankful to them.
Secondly I would also like to thank my parents and
friends who helped me a lot in finalizing this project
within the limited time frame.

THANK YOU!

Simple Pendulum
A simple pendulum can be described as a device where its point mass is
attached to a light inextensible string and suspended from a fixed support. The
vertical line passing through the fixed support is the mean position of a simple
pendulum.
A simple pendulum can be described as a device where its point mass is
attached to a light inextensible string and suspended from a fixed support. The
vertical line passing through the fixed support is the mean position of a simple
pendulum. The vertical distance between the point of suspension and the
centre of mass of the suspended body (when it is in mean position) is called
the length of the simple pendulum denoted by L. This form of the pendulum is
based on the resonant system having a single resonant frequency.
Battery operated
How does a battery operated pendulum work?
All of our battery operated pendulum movements have several things in
common. They are all operated by an electro magnet that gives a pulse
to a magnet on the pendulum arm, which gives the pendulum a very
natural swinging motion. They also operate independently of the actual
clock movement and have no effect on it.
EXPERIMEN
AIM : T
To determine the acceleration of free fall by means of simple pendulum.

APPARATUS REQUIRED:
1. Pendulum bob (a metal sphere with a hook attached or with a hole
bored through its center.

2. Stopwatch .

3. meter scale

4. Stand and clamp

 Drawing board

Battery

FORMULA USED:
The time period of pendulum is given by-
PROCEDURE:
1. Tie a meter length of the cotton to the pendulum bob and
suspend the cotton from the jaws of the improvised vice , such
as two small plates held in a clamp , or any other method of
suspension .
2. Place a piece of paper with a vertical mark on it behind the
pendulum so that when the latter is at rest it hides the vertical
mark from the observer standing in front of the pendulum .
3. Set the pendulum bob swinging through a small arc of about
10˚ . with a stop-watch measure the time for 20 complete
oscillation , setting the watch going when the pendulum passes
the vertical mark and stopping it 20 complete later when it
passes the mark in the same direction . Repeat the timing and
record both times .
4. Measure the length (L) of the cotton from the point of
suspension to the middle of the bob .
5. Shorten the length of the pendulum by successive amounts
of 5
or 6 cm by pulling the cotton through the vice and for each
length take two observation of the time for 20 oscillations .
OBSERVATION
RESULT
CONCLUSION

As a result of the experiment, it can be seen that the acceleration due to

gravity for the first part of the experiment was 10.02 m/s2 and for the
longer length was 10.61 m/s2. Also, when looking how mass effects
period, it can be that the mas does not affect the period as long as the
length is consistent amount the trials. That verifies that there is a
relationship between length and period, that the length of a pendulum
will have the period, regardless of the mass attached to it. The
acceleration due to gravity can also be determined from a single
pendulum as verified from the calculations above. An experimental
design altercation that could have been done to ensure better results
would be for when we performed varying lengths with a constant
weight. We could have used a string that had negligible weights so as to
not affect our results.
PRECAUTION
S
 The thread should be very light and strong
 The point of suspension should be reasonably rigid
 TThe pendulum should oscillate in the vertical plane
without any spin motion.
 The pins should be vertical.

 The floor of the laboratory should not have vibration,

which may cause a deviation from the regular
oscillation of the pendulum

 The length of the pendulum should be as large as

possible in the given situation.

 There must not be strong wind blowing during the

experiment
SOURCES OF ERROR
 human errors comes in when measuring the period
using a stopwatch.
 The pins may not have been fixed vertically.

 The reaction time of the observer plays a significant

error when starting the stopwatch and when stopping
it.

 The curve joining the various points of the graph may

not be smooth free hand curve.
