❖INTRODUCTION
A door is a movable barrier in an
opening , through a
wall made for the providing
communication or access from
the outside
or inside of a building or rooms
of a building.
❖Components of Door Frame
• HEAD-Upper most part of frame.
• POST OR JAMB-Vertical member of frame one on each side to support shutter
• SILL- Bottom part of frame
• HOLD FAST-M.S. Plate to hold or fix the frame in wall.
• HORN- Horizontal projection of frame to fix in wall at head and sill
• TRANSOM- Horizontal member which is employed to sub divide the door frame

❖Components of Shutter
• STYLE-It is vertical outside member of the shutter of the door (Hinge
and Lock)
• TOP RAIL-The top most horizontal member of door shutter
• LOCK RAIL-The middle horizontal member of shutter, to which locking
arrangement fixed
• BOTTOM RAIL-The lower most horizontal member of a shutter
• INTERMEDIAT CROSS RAIL OR FRIEZE RAIL- The additional rail
fixed between top and bottom rail PANEL-It is the area of shutter
enclosed between adjacent rail.

1) Fully Panelled Doors,
2) Partly Panelled and Glazed
doors,
3) Flush Doors,
4) Collapsible Doors,
5) Rolling Shutters,
6) Revolving Door
7) Glazed Doors
❖ Fully Panelled
Doors This type of doors are used most of different types of
residential and public building which are strong and gives
good appearance. It consist style, panel, rails which receive
the panel in inner groove and the panel is made of timber,
plywood, black board, glass etc.

❖ Partly Panelled and Glazed


doors This type of door is used in residential as well as public
building like school, hospital, college, offices etc. Partly panelled
and partly glazed portion is according to light is desires to be admitted
inside the room.
❖Flush Doors
It is used for residential and public buildings. It is popular
due
to pleasing appearance, simplicity in construction, less cost

better strength and more durability.

❖ Collapsible Doors
This type of doors are used at entrance gate of public
building
to control the access and safety purpose. This door is
fabricated from thin mild steel sections.
❖ Rolling Shutters
It consist a frame, drum, and a thin shutter /curtain, thickness is
1mm . Steel guides are provided on side for movement of shutter. The
shutter is counter balanced by means of springs enclosed in drum A hood of
steel protect the drum from weather.

❖ Revolving Door
These are provided where constant foot traffic or people entering
and going out at entrance of public buildings like Bank, Hotels, offices,
hospitals, theatres etc.
❖ Glazed Doors

The door may be fully or partly glazed according to light is


desires to be admitted inside the room.

Glazing thickness, usually 5 to 8 mm thick .
Windows
 A window is defined as an opening in a wall of building which
provides
natural light, natural ventilation and vision in building.

2. Shutter Panel: Style, Top Rail, Bottom Rail, intermediate or lock

 1) Fully panelled window : Wooden windows
 2) Partly panelled and glazed window
 3) Metal windows: Steel windows, Aluminium windows
 4) Sliding windows
 5) Louvered windows

❖ Fully panelled window: Wooden windows
 It consist a wooden framework of vertical member called style
and horizontal member rail are grooved along inner edge of frame, to
receive the wooden panels.

❖ Partly Panelled and Partly Glazed


WindowsSuch windows may be fully paneled or partly glazed or fully
glazed. These are generally provide, where additional light is required to be
admitted through the window.
❖ Metal and Aluminium Windows
 It consist a metal framework of vertical member called
style and horizontal member rail are grooved along inner
edge of frame, to receive the panels.

❖ Sliding windows
It consist two or three track sliding shutter moves horizontally
through guides at top and bottom, while guides are supported on aluminium
box frame.
❖ Louvered Windows
 Louvered windows are provided for the ventilation only and
they do not permits any outside vision.

❖ Bay Windows
This type of window provided for obtaining light and
ventilation
from two adjoining slides.These windows project outside of
external walls of a room.
❖ Corner Windows
Corner windows are provided in the corner of a room. Light and air
admitted from both side. More vision on two directions Building
appearance get improved.

❖ Clear Storey Windows


Clear storey windows are provided when the height of the
room
is much more than adjacent room/varandah.
❖ Gable Windows
 Gable windows are provided in the gable portion of a
pitched roof of the building. They are required in the
stair cases or in the halls with gable walls.

❖ Dormer Windows
A dormer is a roofed structure, containing a window, that
projects vertically beyond the plane of a pitched roof/sloping surface.
❖ Skylight Windows
 Sky light windows are provided on a sloping
roof. It projects above the top sloping surface.

❖Lantern windows
 Lantern windows are also sometimes called
clerestory windows because they
are positioned above eye level, which
means you can see them from below. Today
they can be found on homes in both rural and
urban settings.
❖Conclusion:
➢ Windows and doors perform several functions in a residential
structure, such as: shield an opening from the elements, add
decoration, emphasize the overall design, provide light and ventilation,
and expand visibility.
