Problem Statement
Water quality is rapidly declining due to increased pollution, urbanization, and industrial activities. This global issue threatens
public health, ecosystems, and economies.

Global Water Pollution Crisis: The World Health Organization (WHO) reports that 2.2 billion people lack access to safely
managed drinking water, and 80% of wastewater globally is discharged without adequate treatment.

Economic Impact: According to the World Bank, water pollution costs countries up to 5% of GDP due to health expenses,
reduced agricultural productivity, and environmental degradation. The lack of efficient water quality management systems
exacerbates these economic losses.

Contaminants in Drinking Water

A CDC report reveals that 15% of U.S. households have detectable levels of heavy metals, such as lead and mercury, in their
drinking water, with lead exposure linked to severe developmental issues in children.
Additionally, a study in Environmental Science & Technology found that 90% of bottled water worldwide contains
microplastics, with an average of 325 particles per liter, posing significant environmental and health risks as they enter the
food chain.
Key Challenges in Current Water Quality Monitoring Systems

1. Lack of Real-Time Data: Most existing water quality monitoring systems are
not equipped for real-time analysis, delaying detection of contamination and
slowing response times, which is critical for preventing public health crises.
2. High Maintenance and Operational Costs: Traditional systems often require
manual sampling, costly laboratory tests, and extensive infrastructure, making
continuous monitoring unsustainable and inaccessible for many regions,
especially in rural or underserved areas.
3. Limited Detection of Emerging Contaminants: Current systems struggle to
monitor pollutants like heavy metals and microplastics in real-time, leaving
dangerous contaminants undetected and allowing them to accumulate in water
sources over time.

Addressing these challenges, there is a need for a cost-effective, real-time IoT-

based water quality monitoring system that provides continuous data on key
parameters such as pH, dissolved oxygen, turbidity, heavy metals, and
microplastics. Such a solution would improve water safety, reduce maintenance
costs, and enable timely responses to pollution. By addressing the gaps in current
monitoring systems, we can enhance the protection of water resources,
safeguard public health, and contribute to more sustainable environmental
management globally.
Relevance to SDG
SDG Goal 6 aims to ensure the availability and sustainable management of water and sanitation for all by 2030. Access to clean
and safe water is essential for health, environmental sustainability, and socio-economic development.
• Target 6.1 – Safe and Affordable Drinking Water:
Real-time monitoring identifies contaminants like heavy metals and microplastics, enabling timely interventions to ensure safer
water sources for communities.
• Target 6.3 – Improve Water Quality and Reduce Pollution:
The system detects pollutants in real-time, helping to reduce pollution and prevent harmful substances from entering the water
cycle, supporting wastewater reduction goals.
• Target 6.6 – Protect and Restore Water-Related Ecosystems:
By tracking pollutants and water conditions, the system helps protect freshwater ecosystems, guiding pollution control and
restoration efforts.
• Target 6.b – Strengthen Local Communities' Role in Water Management:
User-friendly dashboards empower communities to monitor water quality, encouraging local participation in water resource
management and pollution prevention.
There is a pressing need for innovative, real-time, and scalable solutions like IoT-based water monitoring systems to meet SDG 6
targets.
