The warlock is an enemy in Doom: The Dark Ages | Revelations.

Inspiration and development[edit]

The warlock is based on an unfinished monster called the "wizard", one of the first enemies conceptualized by former id Software concept artist William Bao during the early phase of the game's development cycle.[1] The finalized design was inspired by one of the archdemon sketches by Jonathan Lane from The Art of DOOM: Eternal.[2]

Multiple sketches also show scrolls or grimoires floating alongside the wizard. The grimoires also appear on some sketches of the acolyte by the same artist,[3] but this idea was rejected for that creature.

According to some unused strings from the game files this type of demon was meant to appear in one of the levels from the base game in Siege - Part 1 and be one of the objectives.[4]

Pre-release[edit]

The warlock was revealed in the official trailer for Revelations at 1:00 as a dark silhouette. The demon can also be seen in the key art from afar on the center of the left side. Shortly after the trailer was released, an official screenshot showed the warlock being confronted with the spear and rocket launcher. In the Slayers Club's article dedicated to reveal of the expansion,[5] that same screenshot was named DTDA_DLC_Warlock, which revealed the demon's name.

Trivia[edit]

  • Despite being cut from the base game as an enemy, statues of the wizard can be seen in The Forsaken Plains and Harbor of Souls, created by id Software's senior 3D prop artist Siyu Ding.[6]
  • Earlier exploration sketches for the wizard showed it with a variety of heads, one of which resembled the head of the blacksmith,[7] a demon that was cut from the game during the "bluesky" phase of development.[8]
