Cogfly

For the enemy that summons Cogflies, see Maestro.

Its form is certainly based on bugs found outside the Citadel. In my own craftwork, I too often look to nature for inspiration.
Hornet

Cogfly is a Red ToolRed Tool in Hollow Knight: Silksong. When used, Hornet throws a Cogfly that then follows her. When Cogflies are near an enemy, they attack it by repeatedly flying into it.

Usefulness

After being thrown, Cogflies follow Hornet and will attack enemies autonomously. Cogflies follow Hornet between rooms, allowing them to be activated before fights begin, and letting Hornet prepare extra Cogflies at Benches. They do not follow her through any means of Fast Travel.

Up to four Cogflies may be active at the same time, and any more thrown will replace an active Cogfly. The maximum is not changed by Quick Sling. They break after hitting an enemy five times.

  • They are especially useful against evasive enemies that are harder to hit with the Needle.
  • They can be used for protection while exploring or making Delivery Wishes.
  • It is best to avoid using Cogflies when attempting platforming challenges that utilise hovering enemies like Driftlins or Skullwings as targets for Needle bounces or the Clawline, since Cogflies will often attempt to target and defeat those enemies before Hornet can reach them. [Missing information]

Previously deployed Cogflies remain affected by Pollip Pouch even after the latter is unequipped.

How to Acquire

Cogflies are acquired by interacting with a crafting bench in High Halls, costing 1.

Trivia

  • When Hornet plays the Needolin, Cogflies use an animation that mimics singing, though they have no dialogue for it.
  • When singing, Hornet's Cogflies produce the same chirping sounds as Cogworkers and Maestro's Cogflies.
  • When Hornet rests on a Bench, Cogflies land on the floor and rest as well.
  • Cogflies can be eaten by Barnaks. If Pollip Pouch is equipped, they become poisoned after eating them.
  • Hornet's Cogflies differ visually from the enemy Cogflies summoned by Maestros, with a face shaped like Hornet's mask and a default colour resembling Hornet's cloak.
  • Cogflies will attempt to attack the phantom prince in the Clover Dancers boss fight, despite the phantom prince not being able to take any damage.
  • After being eaten by Barnaks, Cogflies shatter into pieces identical to those of Maestro's Cogflies, despite having a different colour and design. The game files contain unused sprites for Hornet's Cogfly pieces, which are named hornet_hatchling_cog_particle.
  • Cogflies with one remaining hit appear to have falling fragments.

Update History

  • 1.0.28650 (Patch 2):
    • Fixed Cogflies incorrectly resetting their HP to full on scene change.
    • Fixed Cogflies inappropriately targeting Skullwings.
    • Reduced number of hits that a Cogfly can take from 6 to 5.
