LECTURE I: INTRODUCTION
Department of Chemical Engineering
INSTRUMENTATION?
2/8/2016
Instrumentation
is defined as the art
and science of measurement and control of
process variables within a production, or
manufacturing area.
OR
An instrument is a device that measures
and/or regulates physical quantity/process
variables such as flow, temperature, level,
or pressure.
2
WHAT IS AN INSTRUMENT?
A
2/8/2016
device used to determine the present
value of quantity under measurement
Measuring instrument
Laboratory equipment
Medical instrument
Vehicle instrument
a device used to measure or compare physical properties
the measuring tools used in a scientific laboratory
a device used to diagnose or treat diseases
a device measuring parameters of a vehicle, such as its
speed or position
Weather instrument
a device used to record aspects of the weather
Flight instruments
the devices used to measure the speed, altitude, and
pertinent flight angles of various kinds of aircraft
Mathematical instrument devices used in geometric construction or measurements in
astronomy, surveying and navigation
Optical instrument
relies on the properties of light
