Information on competition:

For the Raindance film festival, when sending out a short film to be put onto the shortlist there are a
few things that have to be taken into account. Firstly the film festival runs from the 20th of
September to the 1st of October. There are several deadline in which you can enter your film,
however the later the film is submitted, the more expensive the entrance fee is.

For Shorts;

Before early deadline (30 april): £25

Before regular deadline (30 May): £35

Before the late deadline(13 June): £50

Before the WAB-extended deadline(20 June): £80

With Short films Raindance will accept ‘works in progress’ and will also accept films of which are
posted onto online sites such as YouTube. For short film there are a few awards that the film can be
nominated for such as; Best UK Short, Best Debut Feature and Best Short Film of The Festival. For
this short film I would like to enter all four of the available awards as I believe my film will be of high
enough quality to qualify or make the shortlist.

I feel that I could win one of these awards as my ambition and passion for this project are un
measurable and I would only submit the best work I could possibly create. My project is my chance
to prove myself and show what I’ve learnt, and what I am capable as an aspiring filmmaker. With this
in mind I am quite unexperienced in making professional short films however I believe that if my
idea can translate to film as I have envisioned it then I believe I could have a chance of being
nominated.

Outline of Idea:

The Basis of my idea is that after the death of Robert Green (Father to the main character Elijah). His
extensive company ‘Trident’ is past down to his son. With Trident’s large dominance and financial
backing there is a bounty set of Elijah’s head and he has to survive with only one man protecting
him. With no back up, no protection, no guns, they must survive or the world could fall to chaos if
the company falls into the wrong hands.

Rules and Regulations:

With Rain dance Film festival there are a few regulations of which have to be followed. As I am
creating a short film, my film will have to be shorter than 45 minutes to qualify for the category. All
films have to be entered from 1st January till the regular deadline of May 30th. The guidelines stated
by The Henley College prefer that there should not be pointless/overuse of swearing when not
necessary, no drug use is to be shown/advertised. Also as a personal rule, I should not make my film
any longer than 20 minutes as I will not be able to meet the deadline that has been set.

Target Audience:

My Target Audience for my short film I believe will be from the ages of 15-45. This is due to the idea
that I will be having a lot of blood and violence and so would not be suitable for younger viewers.
Another reason for this choice is due to the swearing that will be present in the film and will not be

good for younger audiences. Some of the topics and themes that will be included as well that will
better understood and suited to older audiences.

Rationale:

In the last 7 months, I have passed 7 Units, and during this time I have learnt and developed a lot of
skills and techniques. When I first started I did not know how to edit on Premier Pro, but now I know
how to effectively use not just Premier but Audition as well. These skills have developed over time
and me being able to be comfortably edit with these software’s allows me to edit faster and also edit
with better effect, with things such as masking and colour grading allowing my films to have a
unique look and style. During the 7 month I have learnt many other things such as; camera
movements and technique and how they can be used to create tension or emotions; creating Foley
sounds; editing and lighting techniques. The mix of these all together have allowed me to choose
and play with different specialisms. From all that I’ve learnt I have aspirations to go down the path of
a cinematographer/director.

Project Concept:

For my Final major project, I plan to produce an action thriller short film, of which will include an
extended fight scene. The film will be based in London, however the fight scene will be shot a lot
closer to Henley due to the period of time that it will take to complete the fight scene. I will research
other action films, mainly on how these or shot and what technique and equipment they use to
accomplish this. This will give me a greater insight into how I could produce a similar production on a
smaller scale. The production will need a lot of pre-production shooting before filming commences.
This is due to the fight choreography, Make up, and fitness preparation that will have to be taken
place to ensure the film is as realistic and convincing as possible. The equipment needed as well for
the most part will need to be bought and hired. For the filming, I will be employing 3 cameras, fitted
with 50mm F1.8 lenses; Rode microphone and boom; Stedicam and Slider. I have 12 weeks to
complete the entire production with the deadline being the 8th June 2018.

Evaluation:

Throughout the time of when I am developing and filming my production, I will be receiving
feedback from peers, teachers at all times. Not only that but I will be sending out surveys to social
media sites and emailing surveys as well. This is to get a large amount of feedback that I can then
use for my evaluation and to improve my work as it develops. I will also be comparing other
productions to my own during my evaluation and pick out pros and also improvements that I can
make for next time.

Proposed research sources:

My main research that I believe will be most useful will be YouTube and Social media clips of which
are documentary/ Behind the scene videos that delve into the process of creating an action movie.
One director in particular that I think would be very useful for me to look into is Director/Stunt
coordinator Chad Stahelski of whom directed ‘John Wick’ and ‘John Wick 2’. Many of the video for
his film talk in detail about the process and development of the film, with things such as combat
training shooting styles and storytelling being the main focus.

I may also delve into some written sources whether that be books or websites. This may be to try
and decide my target audience and to also research what codes and conventions that my action film
could follow.

What I will research

 How to structure and film a fight scene

 How to shoot fighting choreography
 Safety precautions
 Using lighting and Mise en scene in my production
 Camera angles
