Introduction
Bus terminal infrastructure planning is not just about provision
of requisite facilities, but also about how these facilities serve

Supporting infrastructure refer to the additional facilities which
aid in enhancing user experience, efficiency, and attractiveness
of bus terminal.
These include provision for feeder infrastructure, seating,
landscaping, lighting, way finding (Passenger Information Systems Traveler
(PIS), signage and marking), public art, and breakdown services. Traveler information on information

Information Distribution Framework
The information distribution framework can be broadly divided into two contexts - off board information and on board
information
Off board information is provided to passengers at the terminal. Usual up to date predictions provided include
(Passenger Information System 2015):
• Which route is operated by the next bus to arrive, including its expected departure time and destination.
• When the bus will arrive.
• How closely is it running to its schedule.
• Similar information for the subsequent few services
• General advice (on current travel disruptions) that may be useful to the passenger in understanding the implications for their travel
plans
On board information is provided to passengers after boarding the bus. This includes (Passenger Information System
2015):
• What is the next station or stop.
• When is the expected time of arrival at the next station or stop.
• How closely is the bus running to its schedule.
• Advice on connecting services.
Information medium implemented in bus terminals
1. Real-time arrival information.
2. Electronic schedules and route information.
3. Interactive information displays.
4. Payment and smart card payment kiosks.
5. Audible signage.
6. Wireless connectivity for arrival and scheduling information.
7. Cameras and emergency call stations.
8. Electronic driver-to-waiting passenger communication.
In recent years, new electronic technology has been developed to provide improved traveler information. Information
may be delivered via any electronic media, including:
1. Telephone (either a manned bureau service or an automated answering system).
2. Touch screen kiosks for self-service (e.g. in customer offices).
3. Internet through a website.
4. PDA or mobile phone (typically using SMS or WAP).
5. LED displays and screens inside terminals
Costs & Benefits of Information at Transit Stops
Potential cost of providing information can be divided into 4 categories:
1. Investment Costs
2. Reinvestment Costs
3. Maintenance And Operating Costs
4. Marginal Cost Of Public Funds
The benefits of providing information at transit stops are:
1. Reduction of dwell time
2. Reduction of passengers’ wait time
3. Increasing passenger satisfaction
4. Increasing the total number of passenger
5. Increased terminal efficiency
6. Increased attractiveness

Conclusion
• Intelligent transportation systems (ITS) have become common in public transport (PT) systems, particularly providing real time
passenger information (RTPI) systems
• Real time passenger information system is one of the key element of promoting public transport
• For the successful implementation of real time passenger information systems, various components should be considered, such as:
passenger needs and requirements, stakeholder involvement, technological solution for tracking, data transfer, etc.
• As bus terminals are a part of public infrastructure, ITS facilities should be implemented considering usability by physically
challenged travelers (visual or hearing impaired). Thus, information distribution should comprise visual, voice, or touchable media
• Considering language diversity in India, the ITS installed in the terminal should provide information in multiple language
