I. Objectives
A. Content Standard: The learner demonstrates understanding of: East Asian literature as an art
form inspired and influenced by nature; relationship of visual, sensory, and verbal signals in both
literary and expository texts; strategies in listening to long descriptive and narrative texts; value
of literal and figurative language; and appropriate grammatical signals or expressions suitable to
patterns of idea development.
B. Performance Standard: The learner transfers learning by composing and delivering a brief and
creative entertainment speech featuring a variety of effective paragraphs, appropriate
grammatical signals or expressions in topic development, and appropriate prosodic features,
stance, and behavior.
C. Competencies:
1. Point out elements of a short story. EN8LT-IIc-2.2
2. Infer character traits from a reading text. EN8VC-IIa-1.3
3. Show understanding and appreciation for the different Asian literary texts. EN8LT-IIa-9.2
II. Content
Subject Matter: Elements of a short story; Makato and the Cowrie Shell
References: Learners’ Material (Grade 8), Module II: Embracing Our Heritage
Materials: visual aids, chalk, hand-outs
III. Procedure
A. Classroom Routine
Greetings, prayer, checking of attendance and cleanliness of the room
B. Pre-lection
Ask the students to respond to these questions: What makes a story a story? And What
is your greatest ambition in life?
Solicit answers from the students.
Connect their answers to the lesson/s of the week: Elements of a short story and
Makato and the Cowrie Shell.
C. Activity
Group Check-Up Quiz
Divide the class into 8 groups.
Assign a number to each member of the group.
The teacher will ask a question which will be answered by the number picked by the
teacher.
The questions are based on the lecture about the elements of a short story.
Answers are to be written in a ½ lengthwise. (Only one paper per group)
D. Analysis
Checking of answers.
Let the groups exchange answer sheets with one another for checking.
Discuss students’ answers. Explain the different elements of a short story.
E. Abstraction
Present different situations and let students identify the elements they fall into.
Example: My sister and I had a fun-filled vacation last summer. We stayed at our
grandparents’ house, which was near the beach. We swam in the sea every morning,
climbed the trees in the afternoon and fed the animals before dark. When the moon was
bright we played “patintero’.
F. Application
Let the studennts read the story “Makato and the Cowrie Shell” by Supanee
Khanchanathiti, and identify the different elements of a short story. Use the template
below.
