01.03 Materials

08.03.01 General

Steels used for structural steelwork shall be manufactured to comply with BS 4360: 1990, weld able
structural steels and ASTM A36. The grade of steel shall be 43 unless otherwise specified. All materials
shall be free of seems, cracks, flaws, laminations, injuries, and other defects of any kind.

01.03.01 Steel Sections, Angles and Tubes

Steel sections shall conform to the requirements of BS 4: Part 1: 1980 “Hot-rolled sections”.
Steel angles shall conform to the requirements of BS 4848: Part 4: l972(l986) “Equal and unequal angles”.
Circular Hollow Sections (CHS) and rectangular hollow sections (RHS) shall conform to the requirements
of BS 4848: Part 2: 1975 “Hollow sections”.

01.03.02 Bolts and Nuts

Black bolts and nuts shall conform to the requirements of BS 4190:1967 “ISO metric black hexagon bolts,
screws, and nuts”, strength designations as indicated on the drawings.
Close tolerance bolts and nuts shall conform to the requirements of BS 3692: l967 “ISO metric precision
bolts, screws and nuts”.
High strength friction grip, etc. shall conform to the requirements of BS 4395 “High strength friction grip
bolts and associated nuts and washers for structural steelwork”.
Washers other than for friction bolts, shall conform to BS 4320:1968 “Metal washers for general
engineering purposes”.

01.04 Test Certificates

Manufacturer’s Test Certificates for all steel used for fabrication or for bolts for the works shall be supplied.
They shall include for all the mechanical tests described in the appropriate specification and a chemical
analysis. Notwithstanding the fact that test certificates will be submitted, the engineer may request to have
independent tests performed and to inspect material prior to fabrication.

01.05 Manifacture

The grills shall be fabricated to the design and pattern shown in the drawings. All joints shall be made in
best workman like manner with slotting and welding as required to the specified size and shape. The edge
of the M.S. flats shall be suitably mitred before welding to get the desired shape. The joints shall be fill ed
to remove excess stay after welding
screws, nuts, washers, bolts, rivets and any other miscellaneous fastenings devices shall be of steeland
shall be provided by the contractor. Manufactured M.S. Grills then be fixed in between the posts,
balusters, M.S. framework etc. to correct alignment. Any undulations, bends etc. foundshall be rectified by

the contractor at his own cost. The complete assembly of rill / railing so fixed shall be firm and there shall
not be any lateral movements.

01.06 Sample

Samples of grill and railings shall be submitted for approval of the Engineer-in-charge and to be got
approved before taking up for mass fabrication.

01.07 Installation

Samples of grill and railings shall be submitted for approval of the Engineer-in-charge and to be got
approved before taking up for mass fabrication.

01.08 Design Requirements

01.08.01 Shop Drawings

The contractor shall, unless otherwise specified, prepare and check shop drawings incorporating sufficient
information for the proper fabrication of the steelwork.
Before commencing fabrication the contractor shall obtain the approval of the engineer in writing to all
shop drawings.
The contractor shall carryout all necessary modifications and changes instructed by the engineer and keep
furnishing further shop drawings till such time the final approval is accorded by the engineer.
This approval will signify verification of the correct interpretation by the contractor of the engineer’s
requirements but shall not signify approval of the dimension. Notwithstanding such approval the contractor
shall be entirely responsible for the accuracy of the shop drawings, the correctness of detail and the
proper design of connections and joint shall not relieve the contractor of any of his contractual obligation
who shall be responsible for the safety of the system.
The contractor shall supply the engineer with complete sets of working drawings.

01.09 Painting on Steel

01.09.01 Surface Preparation

Steel surfaces shall be prepared by sand blast cleaning in accordance with BS 7079.
Blast clean to BS 7079 average surface profile to 2 ½ standard.
Surfaces should be dry and free from visual contamination in the form of grid, dust or grease before
abrasive blast painting.

01.09.02 Priming

Zinc phosphate epoxy primer shall be applied immediately after cleaning as described above on dry
surfaces and at temperatures in excess in excess of 10 degrees C and under conditions of reasonable
relative humidity, i.e. not exceeding 85%.
Apply material by airless spray in one or more coats to a firm thickness not less than 50 microns.

01.09.03 Under Coat

Under coat shall be two pack epoxy resin based high build coat and shall be applied by airless spray on
zinc phosphate primer 2 hours after the application of the priming coat to a thickness not less than 100-
125 microns DFT per coat. A minimum of two coats shall be applied.
