2.3 GLYCEROLYSIS CUM DEACIDIFICATION

Sr. Flowchart For Reference DVC-WBLDO-10370

No. Process stages Description
1. DE-AERATION Bleached oil is received in Deaerated tank T801.
T801 is under vacuum and provided with spray system.
2. GLYCEROLYSIS The Free Fatty acid get converted into glycerides by
means of Glycerolysis process Inside D802.
Refined glycerin is added from dosing tank.
Note: Glycerolysis is carried out only for the feedstock
having %free fatty acid content more than 10%.
3. DE-ACIDIFICATION Oil from P801 is discharged to liquid distributor
mounted at top of packing of stripping column of
Deodorizer D802, where oil & live steam travel in
counter-current arrangement.
Due to enhanced surface area of structured packing,
FFA distillation occurs at faster rate.
FFA stripped oil enters in the deodorizer equipped with
sparge pipe arrangement.
Heating is done by thermal oil heater.
Residual impurities like secondary oxidation products
are removed which are responsible for the taste of final
products.
4. FATTY ACID SCRUBBING The fatty distillate vapors from D802, are taken to
Scrubber D804 bottom side of the scrubbing system,
where the vapors are scrubbed by the liquid fatty acid
in counter current circulation to distillate vapors.
The circulations of the liquid fatty acids facilitated by
pump P804 through fatty/water PHE E804 by using
cooling water in circulation.
5. VACCUM SYSTEM Four-stage vacuum system V800 maintains the
vacuum in the deodorizing section and vents the non-
condensable part of the distillates out through
barometric condenser and vent ejector to atmosphere

Q/ST/231222/AA/231360/R0 8
2.3 TRANSESTERIFICATION

The pre-treated feedstock is subjected to transesterification reaction. This is reaction of lipid with an
alcohol to form esters and a byproduct. It is in principle the action of one alcohol displacing another
to from an ester, termed as alcoholysis. It is a reversible reaction therefore excess of alcohol is used
to shift the equilibrium to product side.

Catalyst used are sodium methylate or sodium hydroxide (>1%)

Sr. Flowchart Reference No. DVC-FAME-23E13197-R1

No. PROCESS STAGE DESCRIPTION
1. MIXING OF REACTANTS The feedstock is transferred by P1801 to the reactors R1803.
AND CATALYST Methanol from Tank T1850 is transferred by pump P1850 and
is fed to reactors R1803. Similarly, catalyst solution is fed
from tank T1851 by Pump P1851 to reactors R1803.
2. TRANSESTERIFCATION The reaction mass is kept in recirculation by Pump P1803
REACTION through heater E1803 to control the temperature of the
reaction.
3. FAME AND GLYCERIN The reacted mass is allowed be settle in reactor. Two phases
SEPARATION i.e., methyl ester as a light phase and heavy phase of glycerol
is separated. The glycerol phase is drained from bottom of
both reactors & is conveyed pump P1803 and flashed in tank
T1812 to remove methanol.
4. REMOVAL OF EXCESS FAME is transferred into Flash tank T1807 where excess
METHYL ALCOHOL methyl alcohol is re-moved. The vessel T1807 is connected
to negative pressure ejector EJ1800 for efficient flashing of
solvent traces. Excess methanol vapors are condensed in
cooler E1823 and collected in tank T1855.
5. SOAP REMOVAL Citric acid is added in. the tank T1807 from tank T1811.The
traces of soaps are split with citric acid. Hot water is added in
tank T1807 from tank T1833 by pump P1833. FAME mass is
subjected for water wash with hot water to solubilize the
soaps. Pump P1807 is used for proper mixing of hot water
through heater E1807 for circulating the mass. Settling is
given for the batch and soapy water is decanted then sent for
the treatment for recover fatty mass.
6. DRYING OF BIO DIESEL FAME from the tank T1807, is transferred by pump P1807 to
(FAME) vacuum drying vessel D1808 via heater E1807. Dryer T1808
is connected to the high vacuum system V800 for complete
removal of moisture.
FAME is transferred by pump P1808 to Purchaser's
intermediate storage tank T2000 via heat exchanger E1808
to cool FAME prior to next storage or distillation process.

2.4 METHANOL RECTIFICATION

Sr. Flowchart Reference No. DVC-FAME-19066

No.
PROCESS STAGE DESCRIPTION
1. METHANOL The evaporated methanol from flash vessel & outlet of
CONDENSATION AND EJ1800 are taken in vent condenser E1823. Other vents
RECOVERY from reaction vessels are also connected to cooler. The
condensed mass then drained to receiving tank T1855.
2 METHANOL The methanol from tank T1855 is conveyed by pump
RECTIFICATION P1855 into the methanol rectification column D1858.The
column is working under atmospheric pressure.

The distillation column is provided with re-boiler E1857

and bottom pump P1856 for circulation and transfer of
mass to provide the heat to vaporize the methanol.

The methanol vapors are condensed in heat exchanger

E1859 and is receiver tank T1859. The condensed
methanol is partly circulated as reflux to get pure
Methanol.

Vent from the tank T1859 goes to heat exchanger E1861

where the vapors are cooled by chilled water.

heat exchanger E2006A re-generatively by heat of
FAME vapors.
2. HEATING Preheated FAME enters in the bottom tray& the heat
is provided by thermal oil in E2003 at bottom of
column.
3. SCRUBBING FAME vapors are condensed by scrubbing via
recirculation by pump P2007 from tank T2007. The
level in the scrubber is maintained by level switches.
