Data Types for Students

The document discusses different types of variables in data, including categorical variables which describe categories or groups, and numerical variables which can be either discrete taking countable values or continuous taking values along a range. It provides examples of categorical data like gender and examples of discrete numerical data like number of customers or students. Continuous numerical variables are defined as having an infinite number of possible values between any two points, with examples given like height, area, or time. Finally, a table classifies common variables as categorical, discrete numerical, or continuous numerical.

CATEGORICAL &

NUMERICAL
VARIABLES
Presented By: Mrs. Pooja Godiyal
Types of variable

Categorical Numerical

Discrete Continuous

POOJA GODIYAL
CATEGORICAL DATA
• Describes acategories or groups
• Eg. Gender- Male, Female
• Subject: English, Physics, Chemistry, Psychology
• Yes and no types of response are also categorical

POOJA GODIYAL
NUMERICAL/ QUANTITATIVE
VARIABLE
• Discrete variables are numeric variables that have a countable
number of values between any two values.
• A discrete variable is always numeric.
• Discrete data can usually be counted in a finite manner.
• For example, the number of customer complaints or the number of
flaws or defects.
• Number of Apples on a tree
• Number of students in a class
• Number of childrens
POOJA GODIYAL
NUMERICAL/ QUANTITATIVE
VARIABLE
• Continuous variables are numeric variables that have an infinite
number of values between any two values.
• A continuous variable can be numeric.
• A continuous data is infinite and impossible to count.
• For example, the length of a part or the date and time a payment is
received.
• Your weight can take on every value on some range.
• Height, Area, Distance, Time

POOJA GODIYAL
Classify the following variables
Categorical Quantitative
Discrete Continuous
a) No. of books
b) Colours of lollipops
c) Brand of cars
d) Temperature
e) Height of trees
f) No. of cars
g) amount of water
