The Imprisoning Chamber is a large room located Beneath Hyrule Castle in the Central Hyrule Depths.[1] It is accessible from a staircase in the Forgotten Foundation.

In the Era of Foundation, the Imprisoning Chamber was the site of the Imprisoning War's final battle. Rauru and the Six Sages faced Demon King Ganondorf in combat, but they were unable to withstand the power of his Gloom.[2] As a result, Rauru used the power of his Secret Stone of Light to seal Ganondorf, sacrificing himself in the process.[3][4] Ganondorf knew he would eventually be released from this seal in the distant future, but Rauru told him that Link would appear to defeat him when the time came.[5] Since the War's end, Ganondorf has remained trapped by his seal, though Rauru's body began to fade away. Hyrule Castle was constructed above the Imprisoning Chamber to maintain this seal.[6]
At the beginning of Tears of the Kingdom, Zelda and Link explore Beneath Hyrule Castle to investigate the source of Gloom rising from the area.[7][8] They eventually come upon the Imprisoning Chamber, though Zelda warns Link that they should be careful before entering.[9] Within, they discover a mummified Demon King Ganondorf being held down by Rauru's Right Arm. As they approach, the Right Arm falls off of Ganondorf, and Rauru's Secret Stone falls in front of Zelda. Zelda picks it up, and at that moment, Ganondorf begins to reanimate. He attacks them with a wave of Gloom, and although Link jumps in front of Zelda to defend her, the Master Sword and his arm are damaged in the process. Ganondorf's second attack shatters the Master Sword, though one of its shards cuts his cheek as it flies past.[10]
Demon King Ganondorf taunts Zelda and Link, claiming that Rauru had faith in their abilities.[11] He then summons more Gloom to push the pillar above him upward, elevating Hyrule Castle into the Sky. The ground below them collapses, causing Ganondorf to disappear into the Darkness. Zelda also falls, and Link jumps to catch her. However, she Time Travels with the power of her Secret Stone of Time, while Link is caught by the Right Arm and taken to the Room of Awakening.[10]
After Link returns to the Surface, he can visit Beneath Hyrule Castle to fight Demon King Ganondorf at any time. When he reaches the Imprisoning Chamber, he finds a hole in the ground that leads to Gloom's Origin.

Age of Imprisonment
The Imprisoning Chamber is the most powerful Site of Sacred Power in the Depths.[12] At some point, Rauru visited the Chamber with Sonia and Mineru, where he used Ultrahand to create the spikes on its walls.
While planning the Hyrulean Army's final attack against Demon King Ganondorf, Mineru comes up with a backup plan involving the Imprisoning Chamber. Should they fail to defeat Ganondorf at Hyrule Castle, they will flee and lure him to the Imprisoning Chamber through what will later be known as the Hyrule Castle Chasm.[13] This would enhance Rauru and Zelda's Light powers, giving them an advantage.[14] Meanwhile, Calamo and the Knight Construct would remain on the Surface to draw away a substantial number of Monsters from the Demon King's Army.[15] At the end of the Scenario "The Battle of Hyrule Castle", Rauru puts this plan into motion by ordering a retreat of the Hyrulean Army.[16][17]
Rauru and the Six Sages fight Demon King Ganondorf in the Imprisoning Chamber during the Scenario "The Final Confrontation".[18]
Flashbacks to the Imprisoning Chamber in the modern era can be seen in the Movies "A Chance Encounter", "The Knight Construct", and "The Blade's Journey".

To ensure the king's magic would hold, we erected a castle here to protect this sacred site.
Without the castle in place, the site may be disturbed, allowing the Demon King's hatred and rage to be revived.
The preservation of this castle is therefore tied to the prosperity of the kingdom.
May it watch over an eternal peace. - ↑ "Central Hyrule
Precautions on Top of Precautions
When I told Purah of my plan to venture beneath the castle to investigate the gloom, she expressed... strong opposition. That Link would accompany me did not sway her in the slightest. It was only my suggestion to establish an outpost here—a place to observe the gloom from and to reach the hidden path beneath the castle—that earned her begrudging acceptance." — Voice Memories (Zelda Notes, US, June 5, 2025) - ↑
We need to continue to explore this underground area, forbidden or not. The source of the gloom is down here somewhere.
