Every minute counts. On World Restart a Heart Day, it’s important to remember that CPR saves lives. When someone has a sudden cardiac arrest, immediate action as a bystander gives that person the best chance to survive with a good neurologic outcome. Earlier this week, the U-M Health Frankel Cardiovascular Center and Department of Emergency Medicine celebrated six cardiac arrest survivors. They were all joined by health care providers and first responders who played key roles in their care. Access to expert specialty care from Michigan Medicine is further expanding in Oakland County. Generous donations will enable the University of Michigan to construct an outpatient facility for the Samuel and Jean Frankel Cardiovascular Center, and the Sidney and Madeline Forbes Advanced Imaging Center, in what will become a specialty care campus in Troy. The interconnected facilities will be constructed on approximately five acres of land near the Frances and Kenneth Eisenberg Troy Center for Specialty Care, which is currently under construction. “We will be providing a new level of convenience for patients from the tri-county area who seek Michigan Medicine’s services and increasing access for those who cannot come to Ann Arbor,” said David C. Miller, M.D., M.P.H., U-M’s executive vice president for medical affairs and CEO of Michigan Medicine. Read more: https://michmed.org/w438R

🧠BANK: In a major expansion, the Michigan Brain Bank has moved to a new location at the University of Michigan North Campus Research Complex. The move allows the research team to efficiently store and catalogue hundreds of priceless, donated samples that make up its collection, without concern for equipment failure or space limitations. The Michigan Brain Bank has contributed to studies of many brain diseases, including Alzheimer's, Ataxia, Parkinson's, Huntington's, ALS and psychiatric diseases. “As a result, staff at the Brain Bank are able to quickly process incoming tissue and organize shipments to investigators from around the world who apply to use banked samples,” said Dr. Sami Barmada, director of the Michigan Brain Bank. “This is a significant boon that will help maintain this precious resource for years to come.” Learn more about how people with brain-related conditions can join the research studies that the Brain Bank partners with for donations: https://michmed.org/AQ8xg

Just over one month ago, U-M sophomore Ethan King marked one year since he collapsed on a run during his first week of college. With timely CPR intervention that included two bystanders, a student and a physician, King made it to the hospital and was able to recover from his cardiac arrest. Over the last year, he has been incredibly active. In school, King started studying aerospace engineering. He continues to run with Michigan Club Running and joined soccer and sailing teams. He remains involved in Cardiac Arrest Preparation, a CPR club he co-founded that has trained over 350 students. King has also traveled the world, sailing in the Bahamas with his family and visiting South Korea and Scotland with friends. “I am incredibly grateful for this extra year and so happy that I have been able to make these memories with the people close to me," King said. October 16 is World Restart a Heart Day, a global initiative to increase awareness about bystander CPR. On October 14, the University of Michigan Health Frankel Cardiovascular Center and Department of Emergency Medicine will celebrate Ethan and other recent survivors of cardiac arrest, along with several providers who participated in their care.
