Chris Vognar Boston Globe Jan 6, 2026
Extremely funny people often come from tortured childhoods, a dynamic the doc explores with care. But mostly Zenovich lets Chase squirm under the camera’s gaze and act like himself. Go to Full Review
Owen Gleiberman Variety Jan 6, 2026
Zenovich isn’t doing a harangue against “cancel culture.” She’s asking, in a far more ingenuous and exploratory way: What do we think about someone like Chevy Chase? Go to Full Review
John Anderson Wall Street Journal Jan 2, 2026
Mr. Chase still tries to be funny here, sometimes desperately, and isn’t. Which along with a career’s worth of ill will puts the sting in “I’m Chevy Chase and You’re Not.” Go to Full Review
Clement Tyler Obropta Film Inquiry Aug 25, 2026
The latest in a number of inarticulate, pointless documentaries about famous people that exist only to prop up the filmography of a star who isn’t as relevant now as they were several decades ago. Go to Full Review

…Chevy Chase actually comes out of this well, self-deprecating and reflective….the big strengths of Maria Zenovich’s engaging film are a freewheeling interview with the man himself, and a teasing selection of greatest hits clips… Go to Full Review
Stephen Silver Living Life Fearless Feb 13, 2026
Features extensive interviews with Chase — many of which show him being a jerk live on camera — lays out the entire story, leaving it to the viewer to judge. Go to Full Review

Petros T @PetrosTserpelis 18 hrs ago A linear, comprehensive look at Chevy Chase's life and career told through archive footage and talking heads varying from colleagues to family members. Him being controversial makes it automatically more interesting, and in his own interview tidbits, notably including outtakes, he emerges alternately as an asshole and as quite likable. The film mostly steers clear of sensationalism without overdoing either condemnation or exoneration, and the takeaway is that things aren't black-and-white. See more
David F @dfulmer Aug 20, 2026 Great documentary about a funny comedian. See more
Kate F @RT69708689 Jun 4, 2026 At the beginning of I’m Chevy Chase, he claims the interviewer couldn’t understand who he was and is. It’s simple, he’s an utter and complete asshole. After that, I couldn’t be bothered to watch. Chevy’s approach to humor was pretty much falling down. Watching him babble on in the nastiest of ways wasn’t worth my time. See more
Robert T @Thorntonis Mar 6, 2026 It’s great to see a documentary about the life and career of one of the best in their field. But in this case, go read the 2007 authorized biography by the same name instead. It’s not the film was bad. Or that Chevy’s career is not worthy. It’s that the filmmakers dropped the ball. Chevy Chase is one of the greats. However the film was created (written?) by people who seemed to be trying to ruin Chase’s reputation. He’s a complicated person. True. Chevy mentions that in the very beginning. However they seem to be trying to sensationalize Chevy’s worst characteristics. The interviews with Chevy are hard to watch. One negative question after another. They put him on the defensive at every turn. It’s surprising that Chase let the documentary get produced (assuming he had any say). Highlights included Chase’s early life and career and interviews with all the actors who loved working with him and who were in awe of his talent. A-plus for Chevy. F for the writers and horrible interviewer. See more
Sal D @JustTheLaw Feb 15, 2026 This is an intriguing documentary….intriguing enough to get a glimpse to inner sanctum of Chevy Chase that he chooses to show. Alas, there’s just a very tiny bit of hyperbole and saccharine to not hit four stars. I was most curious about his demons - less about his career arc - so that’s my bias. Still a good watch. See more
Todd T. @toddat Feb 9, 2026 Pretty honest portrait of a complex guy who was never as important as he thinks he is. See more
