[It] is an entertaining, ultraviolent, anime-styled actioner that depicts Reeves as a bionic-armed bounty hunter in a steampunk-infused American West. Go to Full Review

However, viewers who stick with it are rewarded. Not only with a more-than-satisfying first season, but also with a show that has plenty of potential for additional world-building, themes to explore, and character development in future seasons. Go to Full Review

Bass X Machina is relentlessly focused on its theme: that it is incredibly hard to forgive the sins of the past, but building a better future is the only way to end the cycle of violence. Go to Full Review

A glass of Old West Whiskey spiked with tech. Bass X Machina is a steampunk Western that fuses true legends, anime-inspiration, and cultural reckoning as sharp as its hero’s aim. Go to Full Review

Ross G @RT41975970 22 hrs ago Bass X Machina looks good and has solid action, but the story gets messy fast. It starts simple—Bass with a cybernetic arm on a dangerous job—then piles on conspiracies, giant machines, and shifting alliances until it feels overstuffed. Characters and ideas get left hanging. It leans hard on the usual Western tropes: grizzled antihero, stubborn sidekick, corrupt system. Nothing feels new. The constant focus on race and oppression is the biggest drag. Segregation, unequal treatment, experiments on Black bodies, Indigenous struggles—it’s everywhere and often feels heavy-handed. White villains come off cartoonish. Some Indigenous characters also sound more generically urban American (and at times Black-coded) than distinctly Native, which is distracting. Stylish in spots, but the twisted plot, familiar tropes, and constant messaging keep it from clicking. See more
Kay A @RT59843974 1 day ago An achievement in storytelling, animation and style, Bass X takes American history both good and bad and puts through the steampunk filter with surprisingly entertaining results! While it does stretch suspension of disbelief with the steampunk world-building, the racism, oppression and genocidal nature of the White settlers were kept keenly in perspective and historically accurate to actual historical facts and records...regardless of how those facts my affect some feelings. All of it is in service to a very intriguing story even if the elements can be pretty standard to the genre. See more
