In a film based on Neil Simon's hit play, Walter Matthau portrays three unconnected roles. Sam Nash reluctantly joins his wife, Karen (Maureen Stapleton), in the suite where they spent their honeymoon, hoping to revive their flagging marriage. Then Jesse Kiplinger, an aging movie producer, is determined to seduce his old flame, Muriel (Barbara Harris). Critics Consensus

Featuring three Walter Matthau performances for the price of one, Plaza Suite is an uneven but overall entertaining Neil Simon adaptation.

It is a minor agony: humorless, loveless, calorie-scared.

Even though Mr. Matthau is one of America's finest comic actors, I found most of his work here filled with desperation, quite like the rather ratty hairpieces he wears to differentiate the three characters he plays.

It may be there could never be too much Matthau. With "Plaza Suite" and "A New Leaf" he has reestablished himself as one of our funniest actors, proving that role selection is a crucial element in an actor's competence.

You get three Walter Matthaus for the price of one here, as he cynically bulldozes his way through three acts of Neil Simon's play about the goings-on in a swanky hotel suite.

"Plaza Suite" goes sour immediately and even talented performers the caliber of Walter Matthau, Barbara Harris, and Lee Grant can't quite salvage the film treatment of Neil Simon's three-act hit play.

Vaguely recall seeing it in theater when it came out, i think. Not too memorable for me. But it and Neil Simon was widely heralded.

Plaza Suite is a disappointing film. It is about relationship issues are presented and taking place in suite 719 of the Plaza Hotel in New York City. Walter Matthau and Maureen Stapleton give horrible performances. The screenplay is badly written. Arthur Hiller did a terrible job directing this movie. I was not impressed with this motion picture.

Based on Neil Simon's hit broadway play with three vignettes, each starring Matthau. The first is about a married couple with the husband admitting to a n extra marital relationship on the day of their anniversary. The second is about a producer seducing a young woman. The third is about the mother and father of a bride-to-be who locked herself in the bathroom moments before the wedding. All these vignettes take place at a Plaza suite. This is really a great showcase for Matthau's charisma and comedic personality. He really gets a chance to shine. However, Plaza Suite is not so well translated to the big screen here, in a stagey and overall underwhelming cinematic version that nevertheless does not undermine the charm and wit of the original material by Neil Simon. Nevertheless, it's not quite as memorable as it should have been, and for that reason it comes across as rather disappointing.
