Amanda and her stepfather Martin struggle with a moral issue that divides them. Has Amanda's mother Leslie, who has dementia, lost the ability to make critical decisions in her own best interests? And, if so, who is responsible -- a spouse, a child, an institution -- for making such a determination? As Amanda and Martin are forced to make increasingly difficult choices, the repercussions spiral out of their control. Academy Award winner Juliette Binoche (The Taste of Things), Academy Award nominee Tom Courtenay (45 Years), Anna Calder-Marshall (Wuthering Heights), and Florence Hunt (Bridgerton) star in this unflinching drama. The film won the Silver Bear Jury Prize and Tom Courtenay and Anna Calder-Marshall won the Silver Bear for Best Supporting Performance at the 2026 Berlin International Film Festival.

Hammer has made a pair of films that reflect the difficult dilemmas of real life, with this one sitting alongside Amour and Vortex in its shattering depiction of how familial relationships shift toward the end of people’s lives, often in depressing ways.

"Queen at Sea" is that kind of exceptional film: a spare, effortlessly controlled narrative whose many profound moments quietly shock you.

For all the film’s distractions, omissions, and short-circuits, Hammer displays a keen eye for devastating ironies, for clearly and plainly imagined events that don’t merely turn the tables but overturn them.

Lance Hammer’s drama explores the ethics of intimacy and consent among the aged, and is astutely designed to highlight the performances from Juliette Binoche and Tom Courtenay, in a contest of caring for a woman they love.

QUEEN AT SEA takes an ambitious approach to examining the emotions involved in eldercare. It sometimes put the emphasis on the wrong syllable, but it will resonate with viewers who are dealing with these issues.

This is worst topic for a movie & Julianne Moore movie alredy done it & quite adequate. While it’s an important topic, if you know topic & its effects on victim & those around her, then no need to watch a fictional story on it. It was boring watch back then & still a boring watch now. I wish I had read synopsis 1st to avoid it & shows importance of reading synopsis before watching movie. You know, you go to movies to escape from real life not live thru an even more dreadful one.
