Critics Consensus

M Night Shayamalan's The Sixth Sense is a twisty ghost story with all the style of a classical Hollywood picture, but all the chills of a modern horror flick.

At root, his films are patient vindications of crazy faiths, of ghosts and comic book heroes. Loneliness is his theme, and when blessed with courageous performers, as in The Sixth Sense, he can take us just about anywhere. Go to Full Review

You leave slightly asquirm. You know it will linger. It becomes a clammy, chilly movie building toward a revelation that you cannot predict. As I say: I cannot tell you. You'd hate me if I did. I can only say, don't look now, but look sometime. Go to Full Review

All these years later, The Sixth Sense still holds up as an all around great film. The film powerfully portrays the emotional journeys of three separate characters without short-changing any of their stories. Go to Full Review

Melissa L @Agent99 2 days ago This is one of Bruce Willis' best movies, I think, if not the best. This is probably only the second time I watched this movie. I saw it back in 1999, when I saw it the the first time. I didn't see the twist coming the first time, and was watching for it this time. I highly recommend it. See more

Colette G @Colette111 5 days ago I love it!! Can’t believe I’m watching this for the first time in 2026. A perfect blend of tenderness and twist and a bit of spookiness. See more
keven Q @kevenquinlan Oct 25, 2026 I saw this in the theatre's and it was the object of endless meme's for a good year or two. I loved it than. Watching in 2026= A Masterpiece. The scene with Collette and Osment, in the car, at the end, was so profoundly tearjerking as to be worth keeping just for that. One of M.'s best- thank you for your visionary work- I appreciate you like you'll never understand. I put this in my top 50- which, when you are a fan of the medium, is rarified air. It's not #50, probably in the top 25, so it's amaze-balls. See more
Paul L @HonestReview12740 Oct 25, 2026 So so good! I love this film, even without the twist it's good, MUST WATCH! See more
Alejandro E @Alex970 Oct 25, 2026 Of all the films that were all the rage at the turn of the millennium, this one reinvented the ghost genre, giving viewers the chance to be surprised by effects that hadn’t been used before, and in the process proved that Bruce Willis is capable of more than just action films. For a bit of useless trivia: director M. Night Shyamalan makes a brief cameo. See more
