Critics Consensus

Brutal yet captivating, The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo is the result of David Fincher working at his lurid best with total role commitment from star Rooney Mara.

The result is more cohesive, and of course longer, though dedicated fans will be annoyed by departures from the books for the sake of brevity.

overall the movie does take allegiances with both the book and original movie, but it comes into its own to unravel a truly alluring story.

Fincher’s sophisticated treatment imbues this tale of corruption, sexual assault, and trauma with a textured hand; and in addition to surpassing the Swedish versions, he gives the story new life.

I didn’t read the books, so I didn’t know what this movie would be about… it is very graphic on its rape scene and the premise is based on rape. I would not have watched it if I had know that. The story line was also jumbled. Daniel Craig and he was in turmoil with his journalism, then got hired to find a ‘murdered’ girl, then choses the girl with the dragon tattoo to help him, then they figure out there are more murders/rapes, then figures out the story behind the ‘murdered’ girl… then we get the girl with the dragon tattoo… why does she have the tattoo, why is she the best investigator, why does she cover up her bruises with more tattoos, why did she kill her father… then the not so friendly family that hired Daniel Craig and the girl with the dragon tattoo… so scattered, didn’t come together well, was too graphic for my taste. Would not recommend

This movie felt like two movies stapled on top of each other. The story dragged out for way too long, with the two main characters not having any interaction until more than halfway through the film. Despite its unbearably slow pacing, the movie still presented an incredibly intriguing and compelling mystery, full of twists and turns that were as shocking as they were satisfying. I could see mystery, drama, and thriller fans enjoying this movie, but it was really hard to sit through, and there are definitely better movies out there.

A remake nobody needed turned out to be a strong, atmospheric thriller anyway. Mara and Craig are superb, Fincher’s craft is immaculate, and the film has a chilly, hypnotic grip that holds for nearly 3 hours.

A captivating story with brilliant acting and gorgeous cinematography, ultimately let down by a sloppy and unsatisfying ending to the central mystery.
