Critics Consensus

The Last House drags a capable cast through an increasingly repetitive narrative without delivering the suspense or thematic depth its premise demands.

The pulse of the film is the family’s dynamic, but it remains fairly unfrayed as the years pass. Again and again, the script takes a turn away from any sustained tension. Go to Full Review

Even if Lee and Moura work overtime to sell the terrifying scenario these parents find themselves in, ridiculous lines and worse decision-making takes us out of the moment. Go to Full Review

There’s nothing to tether yourself to, no real narrative anchor point that’s anything more than a discombobulated message of the power of family. Go to Full Review
Cate Young faint praise* Oct 7, 2026
Though consensus around the film is unlikely to change, (especially since it doesn’t quite land its ending) it’s a tense and emotionally engaging film that’s well worth its runtime. Go to Full Review
Marlon Wallace The M Report (WBOC.com) Sep 21, 2026
The narrative is divided into two sections. The first is about survival and the second is about escape, if possible. The odds are certainly against them in both sections. Go to Full Review

It would be more effective to showcase a stronger message about monstrosity. Go to Full Review

Ben H @RT61702171 22 hrs ago Boring, grim, slow, and clunky. Exactly what you would expect from an AI script with a context window of 10 minutes. It's a fever dream that meanders between generes, occasionally bumping into a wall just long enough to make you think something interesting is going to happen. I cannot imagine anyone on the creative team put any love into this. There is no passion on display. Most technical aspects are drearily competent. The acting, the script, and the directing are all over the place. No one seems to be having any fun. You want to kill a dog and have the family eat it, fine. You then need to accept your movie is a grim survival story, not a fairy tail where you can survive 5 years on floor corn and wacky chimny trap meat and then befriend cthulu. This movie is terrified of it's own shadow, and can't bear its characters feeling pain for more than a couple seconds. If you're a film student looking for examples of what not to do, watch it. Otherwise pass. See more
G K @gksdfafgestr 23 hrs ago I'm so pleased I can give 1/2 a star. This was horrible. Absolutely no logic in the entire movie, including the ending. Our entire family hurled frustrated insults the last 10 minutes of the movie. See more
Kyle P @RT81863768 4 days ago Really had hope for this for the first 20-30 minutes and that quickly died. Not worth the watch, really dragged, poor climax and ending, really just dropped the ball. See more
Michael B @MtotheJ Oct 29, 2026 Started off well as a intriguing unexplained phenomenon , but then devolved into a dull creature feature. Way too many plot holes. See more
Clare A @ClareAvida Oct 25, 2026 I’m bothering to leave a review because actually, although there were plenty of plot holes, it was a bit weird, and the ending was a bit preachy, and obviously the actual premise was ridiculous, it was still enjoyable. We felt there was a pointed message about being in the fish bowl in place of the fish and we talked about what we’d do in that situation. I was prepared not to like it at all but it was a good way to spend a couple of hours! See more
Marty A @RT49771847 Oct 25, 2026 As usual rotten tomatoes critics seem to have missed the point of the movie. Although the script may lose tension at times the film is about the family dynamic and how staying together a family can accomplish anything. As for the threat, how many movies have had more far fetched ideas yet still did so well. The movie deserved a lot more than what critics here have been giving it. See more
