A1 Handbook) Reference …..
NFPA 13R Standard for the Installation of Sprinkler Systems in Residential
Occupancies up to and Including Four Stories in Height
NFPA 14 Standard for the Installation of Standpipe and Hose Systems
NFPA 70 National Electrical Code (NEC)

As Designed - Fire Alarm System and accessories shall be in accordance with

A2 the approved project-specific design drawings, diagrams, schedules, lists,
databases and associated documents.

Fire Detection System Commissioning:

All fire detection system testing shall be witnessed by a designated
representative of the Area Lead Fire Prevention Engineer / Loss Prevention
A3 Department and the Area Fire Marshall / Fire Protection Department. At least
10 business days prior to commissioning of any new fire alarm system, the
following deliverables shall be provided to the Area Lead Fire Prevention
Engineer and the Area Fire Marshall (A5 to A11).

Before pre commissioning, panel sections shall be opened up and inspected

A4 for cleanliness and to ensure no foreign bodies are present. Dust shall be
removed using a vacuum cleaner or rags as appropriate.

A5 Contractor to Provide: Certified, as-built drawings for the fire alarm system.

Contractor to Provide: Written certification from the designer that the

installed fire alarm system is in compliance with NFPA 72. (A stamp of the
A6
registered engineer on the drawings with a statement stating that the system is
in compliance with NFPA 72 shall be considered as meeting this requirement).

Contractor to Provide: For air aspirated high sensitivity smoke detection

systems utilizing sampling pipes, provide certified drawings of the piping
network showing size and locations of all orifice holes in the sampling pipes
A7
and endcaps, and the location and specifications of all piping components. The
design calculations or program output used to design the piping network shall
also be provided.

Contractor to Provide: Programming documentation for the fire alarm control

A8
panel.
Contractor to Provide: For all high sensitivity smoke detection systems, the
A9 manufacturer or manufacturer's representative shall provide recommendations
for the alarm and pre-alarm sensitivity settings.

A10 Contractor to Provide: Operating and programming manuals for the system.

A11 Contractor to Provide: Commissioning procedures.

B Visual Inspection of Different Accessories of the System

Conform that the insulation resistance test record for all instrument wire and
B1 cable are carried out, certified and recorded for both before and after cable
installation as per Attachment 1.
#

The equipment arrangement shall be inspected and checked against the

B2
relevant Planned Layout and General Arrangement Drawings.

Particular attention shall be paid to the alignment of the panel face to ensure
B3
correct matching of instruments and where fitted, mimic diagrams.

The Fire Alarm System shall be inspected to ensure all identifying labels and
B4
tags are installed in accordance with the schedule and layout drawings.

Interconnecting wiring of control panel sections shall be checked against the

B5
detailed wiring diagram.

Power supply from normal and UPS sources shall be checked as per
B6
connection wiring schedule.

Access to Electrical Equipment Behind Panels Designed to Allow

Access: Access to electrical equipment shall not be denied by an
B7
accumulation of conductors and cables that prevents removal of panels,
including suspended ceiling panels. (NEC 760.21)

Mechanical Execution of Work: Fire alarm circuits shall be installed in a neat

B8
workmanlike manner. (NEC 760.24)

Verify that only copper conductors are permitted to be used for fire alarm
B9
systems. [NEC 760.49(A)]

B10 Insulation on conductors shall be suitable for 600 volts. [NEC 760.49(B)]

Conductor Materials:
B11
Conductors shall be solid or stranded copper. [NEC 760.49(C)]

Multiconductor non–power-limited fire alarm circuit cables, Types NPLFP,

B12 NPLFR and NPLF, shall not be installed exposed in ducts or plenums. [NEC
760.53(B)(1)]

Cables and conductors installed exposed on the surface of ceilings and

sidewalls shall be supported by the building structure in such a manner that the
B13
cable will not be damaged by normal building use.
(NEC 760.24)

Verify that cables are attached to structural components by straps, staples,

cable ties, hangers or similar fittings designed and installed so as not to
B14
damage the cable. The installation shall also comply with 300.4(D). (NEC
760.24)

Fire Alarm Circuit Identification: Fire alarm circuits shall be identified at

terminal and junction locations in a manner that helps to prevent unintentional
B15
signals on fire alarm system circuit(s) during testing and servicing of other
systems. (NEC 760.30)

Fire Alarm with Power-Supply Circuits: Powersupply and fire alarm circuit
conductors shall be permitted in the same cable, enclosure or raceway only
B16
where connected to the same equipment.
[NEC 760.48(B)]

C Visual Inspection of Different Accessories of the System

Cables: Conform that the insulation resistance test record for all instrument
C1 wire and cable are carried out, certified and recorded for both before and after
cable installation as per Attachment 1
