ACTUAL TEACHING

TOPIC: TRIGONOMETRY IN FORM OF COSINE AND SINE

The revision of last topic was carried out with questions and the teacher linked this to the new
topic to make learners focus.
The following were discussed under the topic:
 Right Angled Triangle
This is a triangle that have only one of it’s angles equal to 90 degrees that is, if a triangle that
have one of its 3 angles equal to be 90 degrees, then it is a right angle triangle. A little square at
the corner of the perpendicular side signifies that the angle id 90 degrees.

 Trigonometric Ratios: Tangent, Sine and Cosine Ratios

A trigonometric ratio is a ratio of the lengths of two sides of a right-angled triangle. The three
trigonometric ratios are:

1. Sine (Sin)

2. Cosine (Cos)

3. Tangent (Tan)

Hypotenuse, Opposite and Adjacent:

Hypotenuse: The longest side of a triangle is called the hypotenuse. It is the side opposite the
right angle.

Opposite: This is the side opposite the angle under consideration.

Adjacent: It is the side next or adjacent to the angle you are using.
Tangent of an Angle:

In any right-angled triangle, the ratio opposite is called the tangent

Tangents of some chosen angles

Angle A Tan A

25⁰ 0.4663

30⁰ 0.5774

35⁰ 0.7002

40⁰ 0.8391

45⁰ 1.000

50⁰ 1.192

55⁰ 1.428

60⁰ 1.732

65⁰ 2.145
70⁰ 2.747

USE OF SINE

Sines and cosines of angles are used to find the lengths of unknown side in triangles. The table
below gives the sines of some chosen angles.

Angle A Sin A

30⁰ 0.5000

35⁰ 0.5736

40⁰ 0.6428

45⁰ 0.7071

50⁰ 0.7660

55⁰ 0.8192

60⁰ 0.8660

The values in the table are given to 4 significant figures.

Example 1:
Calculate the value of y in the figure below.

17cm

50°

Solution

The hypotenuse is 17 cm and y is adjacent to the given angle. Thus use the cosine of the given angle.

Cos 50⁰ =

Thus, = 17 x cos 50⁰

= 17 x 0.642 8

= 10.93 cm

= 11 cm to 2 S.F

Example 2

Calculate the value of x in the figure below.

X 20cm

55°

Solution

In the figure above, the hypotenuse is given and x is opposite the given angle. Thus ,

Sin 55⁰ =

Thus, = 20 x sin 55⁰

= 20 x 0.8192
= 16.384 cm

= 16 cm to 2 s.f.

The teacher adopted varied strategies and activities to sustain learning. Learners participated
actively in the lesson and responded positively to the teachers questions which enhanced
learning. Good questioning skills was employed by the teacher to enhance reflective thinking in
the learners. Assignment were given to extend learning. Conclusion was carried out by
explaining the salient point to the learners for effective learning.
