Service Bulletin SB 2X-78-07 R1
Issued:
Revised:
13 Jun 2007

Model SR20
ATA 78-20: Noise Suppressor
SR20 Heat Exchanger Inspection
COMPLIANCE
Mandatory: Accomplish this Service Bulletin within 25 Flight Hours or within the next three calendar
months, whichever occurs first. Prior to flight, the pilot must check for exhaust odor inside the airplane
cabin. If exhaust odor is present, the airplane may not be operated and the condition corrected prior to fur-
ther flight. Compliance time begins upon receipt of this Service Bulletin.
This Service Bulletin has been revised to require a pressurization check of the heat exchanger weldment.
Operators who have complied with the original release of this Service Bulletin, dated 13 Jun 2007, must
complete this Service Bulletin in its entirety with the exception of operators who have upgraded to the
improved heat exchanger weldment as specified in the Materials Section below. These operators can con-
sider this Service Bulletin accomplished and may complete airplane records by noting compliance with SB
2X-78-07 R1 in Aircraft Logbook.
EFFECTIVITY
Cirrus Design SR20 serial numbers 1005 thru 1815.
APPROVAL
FAA approval has been obtained on all technical data in this Service Bulletin that affects type design.
PURPOSE
A condition occurred where a spot weld attaching a baffle to the heater muff failed and allowed exhaust
fumes into the aircraft cabin. This potential condition could result in carbon monoxide leaking into the
cabin.
DESCRIPTION
This Service Bulletin requires a pressurization check of the heat exchanger weldment and describes two
actions the operator may choose to address the Service Bulletin condition:
• Continued Compliance with Current 100-Hour Pressurization Check Only*,
• Installation of an Improved Heat Exchanger and Continued Compliance with 100-Hour Pressuriza-
tion Check. Because the improved heat exchanger is of a different design than the existing heat
exchanger and is not subject to weld failure in the same manner, this procedure has the highest like-
lihood of reducing the probability of carbon monoxide entering the cabin.
* Note: Aircraft Scheduled Maintenance Checks already require a Heat Exchanger Pressurization Check every 100 hours.
WARRANTY INFORMATION
For aircraft under warranty at the issue date of this Service Bulletin, Cirrus Design will cover all parts and
labor costs for this Service Bulletin and one pressurization check if the work is accomplished within the
Compliance time period and the work is performed at an authorized Cirrus Design Service Center.

ACCOMPLISHMENT INSTRUCTIONS
A. Remove key from ignition.
B. Set BAT 1, BAT 2, and AVIONICS switches to OFF positions.
C. Remove engine cowling. (Refer to AMM 71-10)
D. Disconnect battery. (Refer to AMM 24-30)
E. Perform pressurization check per Inspection/Check - Heat Exchanger. (Refer to AMM 78-20)
1. If broken welds are discovered during the inspection, the heat exchanger must be upgraded per
Step 3.
2. If no broken welds are discovered and the pressurization check passes, the operator may
choose one of the following actions:
a. Continued Compliance with Current 100-Hour Pressurization Check
Performance of this procedure indicates the operator has elected to address the condition
by complying with the current Aircraft Scheduled Maintenance Checks which already
require a Heat Exchanger Pressurization Check every 100 hours.
(1) Re-Install existing heat exchanger weldment and shroud. (Refer to AMM 78-20)
b. Installation of an Improved Heat Exchanger and 100-Hour Pressurization Check
Performance of this procedure indicates the operator has elected to address the condition
by upgrading to an improved heat exchanger in addition to complying with the current Air-
craft Scheduled Maintenance Checks which already require a Heat Exchanger Pressur-
ization Check every 100 hours. This procedure has the highest likelihood of reducing the
probability of carbon monoxide entering the cabin.
(1) Serials SR20-1005 thru 1422: Order kit 70201-001 for replacement heat exchanger
weldment and shroud.
(2) Serials SR20-1423 thru 1815: Order kit 70201-002 for replacement heat exchanger
weldment and shroud.
(3) Remove heat exchanger weldment. (Refer to AMM 78-20)
(4) Discard existing heat exchanger weldment and shroud.
(5) Install replacement heat exchanger weldment and shroud. (Refer to AMM 78-20)
3. If pressurization check fails or any broken welds are discovered, upgrade the heat exchanger:
a. Serials SR20-1005 thru 1422: Order kit 70201-001 for replacement heat exchanger weld-
ment and shroud.
b. Serials SR20-1423 thru 1815: Order kit 70201-002 for replacement heat exchanger weld-
ment and shroud.
c. Remove heat exchanger weldment. (Refer to AMM 78-20)
d. Discard existing heat exchanger weldment and shroud.
e. Install replacement heat exchanger weldment and shroud. (Refer to AMM 78-20)
F. Connect battery. (Refer to AMM 24-30)
G. Install engine cowling. (Refer to AMM 71-10)
H. Complete airplane records by noting compliance with SB 2X-78-07 R1 in Aircraft Logbook.

NOTE
Inspect exhaust components for cracks, dents, and evidence
of exhaust gas leakage through spot welds, clamps, and flanges.
Verify outer spot welds securing external baffle to heat exchanger LEGEND
weldment are not cracked or broken. 1. Heat Exchanger Weldment
2. External Baffle
Inspect baffle on heat exchanger for cracks. Moderate warpage of the baffle is acceptable.
