Painbrush

From Inkipedia, the Splatoon wiki

The Painbrush is a main weapon in Splatoon 3, manufactured by Nouveau. It is a brush with higher power and range than other weapons in its class.

Description

The Painbrush is a brush that acts like a heavy weapon within its class. The weapon is slower and consumes more ink than other brushes, but in return, it throws ink farther, deals much more damage, and covers the ground more effectively.

By holding ZR, the weapon can be pushed along the ground, moving at a speed slightly faster than that of the Octobrush, and with a wider ink trail. This is the only statistic in which the weapon is faster than another one in its class.

When initiating any action by pressing ZR, the weapon performs a windup; the brush head rotates before striking. This animation is similar to that of rollers but is absent from other brushes; the Painbrush is the only weapon in its class to possess this feature.

Given its stats and how it differs from other weapons in its class, the Painbrush can be thought of as a “brush” version of the Dynamo Roller.

Appearance

The Painbrush resembles a fan brush with a slit in its white bristles, forming a V. Its silver, metallic body resembles a palette cup. On the head near the bristles, the Nouveau logo can be seen, colored white. On the side of the weapon, another Nouveau logo can be seen, engraved into the metal, just below a unique oval symbol with text inscribed inside it.

Two small white arrows are painted on the head and body of the Painbrush; when the weapon is inactive, they point toward each other, indicating the weapon’s default position before the head pivots to attack.

The ring separating the handle from the rest of the weapon changes color matching user's color. The handle itself is made of wood.

Data

  • The Painbrush is a middleweight weapon.
  • The matchmaking range is 13.1. The game's matchmaking system looks at a team's average matchmaking range value, and matches them against a team with a similar average.
  • Ink consumption per second while sliding is 10.8%.
  • While sliding, the player's movement speed is set to 0.18 units per frame.
  • After sliding, there is a 20 frame second cooldown before the ink tank starts refilling.
  • Hitting an opponent while sliding deals 30 damage.
  • While sliding, the Painbrush leaves an ink trail that is 2.6 units wide.

Flinging ink

  • The ink consumption of 4.8% allows players to attack 20 times before needing to refill the ink supply.
  • When attacking, it takes 23 frames to start swinging the brush.
  • The weapon can be swung every 13 frames (4.62 times per second).
  • When attacking while moving, the player's movement speed is set to 0.024 units per frame.
  • After swinging, there is a 50 frame cooldown before the ink tank starts refilling.
  • Attacks have a base damage of 60.
  • For normal attacks, ink loses damage based on distance traveled. Ink starts losing damage at 5.0 units and stops losing damage at 13.0 units. The minimum damage before time-based falloff is applied is 31.
  • If a glob of ink is in the air for more than 24 frames after being flung, it loses damage each frame until frame 45, at which point it will deal 50% of its original damage. Thus, the minimum damage that can be dealt per glob is 15.5.
  • Damage does not change based on the angle of the ink.

Quotes

Sheldon's Introduction

If you like brushes but wish they had a bit more range and power, then you've got to experience the Painbrush for yourself! It's all thanks to a unique 90 degree rotation by the brush head, giving this weapon the most range of ANY brush out there. The trade-off is that each swing is a bit slower, but this is still a brush we're talking about. You'll be flying across the map, and you can use Curling Bomb to blaze your path. Add in the Wave Breaker special to light up your enemies, and you've got a potent set designed for speed and extreme range!

SRL Ballistics back again! The S-BLAST was and IS cool, but we can only watch the video so many times. Now we're on to the Painbrush, the biggest, heaviest, and NEWEST brush in the game! Please hold while we watch and analyze our new Painbrush video 2,479 times.

And here it is in action! Note how the first swing is slow, but subsequent swings fling ink fast and wide. Plus, you can hold down the ZR Button to advance quickly as needed. If battling is an art, this brush could be... an art tool? IDK. We're scientists, not artists.

Mechanized Range and Power
The brush's 90-degree spin mechanism provides a nice boost to range and power. The long windup leaves you open, but once you get going you'll be able to do a flurry of far-reaching ink flicks.

Trivia

  • The Painbrush is not included in Return of the Mammalians due to being added post-release.
  • The Painbrush is the first new entry in the brush class since the original roster from Splatoon.
  • The Painbrush is the only brush since the original Splatoon to have the ability to splat an enemy in two hits.
  • The Painbrush is the only brush that has a delay before delivering its first strike, similar to a roller.
  • The Painbrush has a 90° swiveling head that activates upon the weapon’s first strike and emits a faint metallic sound as it retracts when the user stops striking or switches to squid/octopus form.
  • With its 90° swivel head, the Painbrush is the only brush that strikes with its head horizontal, much like a scythe blade.
  • The Painbrush's strafing speed is extremely slow, so much so that even if it were doubled, it would still be significantly slower than that of a .96 Gal.
  • Despite its metallic appearance similar to the Dynamo Roller, the Aerospray and the Nautilus, the Painbrush isn't an Ammo Knights weapon, but a Nouveau one.
  • Prior to the 9.3.0 update of Splatoon 3, the Painbrush's attack speed matched that of the Splatana Wiper, at ~4 hits per second.
    • The Painbrush has since been increased to ~4.6 hits per second.

Etymology

Painbrush is a combination of the words pain, referencing the high damage of the weapon, and brush while also being a pun on paintbrush.
