Weekly Journal: Filming Insights

This weekly journal entry from the filmmaker discusses their progress filming for their short film over the past week. They completed more filming and started assembling clips in the editing software. They found the storyboards they created earlier were very helpful for planning shots. They encountered issues with an unreliable actor not following directions well but overcame it through patience and explanation. Their filming locations turned out well for the atmospheres needed. Going forward, they still need to film a few more scenes and will continue editing, though they have made a start of it already.

WEEKLY JOURNALS

This is where you think about your FMP learning journey and development.
Don’t simply describe what you did - consider what you have learnt and how this has benefitted
your project. What do you need to improve?

THIS IS JUST GUIDANCE THAT YOU NEED TO ADAPT TO YOUR OWN PROJECT. YOU HAVE CREATED YOUR
OWN PRODUCTION SCHEDULES AND YOUR WEEKLY BLOGS SHOULD REFELCT THAT.

THESE QUESTIONS SHOULD BE ADDRESSED IN THE WEEKS YOU COMPLETED THEM. DO NOT JUST SUBMIT THIS
FORM FILLED IN FOR YOUR WEEKLY BLOGS. THERE SHOULD BE 11 WEEKLY BLOG ENTRIES (INCLUDING
EASTER).

Week Eight – Filming

FILMING

What practical work have you done I have completed more filming and started to put together clips
this week - and how helpful was your in the editing software. However, I do not have the considerable
earlier planning? amount to dive right into the editing process. The effort I have
put into the storyboards that I made has helped me immensely
since they show exactly what each shot should be, this enables
me to get plenty of different varied shots and extras if needed.

How will this be useful to you as your The storyboards will let me get extra shots by giving me different
production process continues ideas as I look at the original shots. In the editing process they
will help me by showing what scenes go where and when, this
will prevent me from getting confused and muddling up clips,
ruining the storyline.

Upload behind the scenes pictures This Cameron Lindsay,

and videos and comment on what the main character:
they show Danny. He is going over
the storyboard I made
which I sent to his
phone, this is so he
knows how to act and
what to do in this
particular scene.
This is Fergus Lawrie who
plays the character of
The Bully. In this picture
he is learning his lines of
the part where he gets
killed. This somehow
took a long time to get
the words right
however.
What issues did you encounter whilst I found that the actor who was playing the role of Danny wasn’t
out filming and how did you very good at following instructions, it took quite a while for most
overcome them? scenes but through patience and a lot of explaining the final
scene was always brilliant. Some days it started to rain, I
overcame that by letting the actors that we weren’t able to film
and quickly organise another date to film. Some actors I knew
would be very unreliable so I made them reliable by paying
them and if they were being lazy and not coming out that day I
could use the payment against them so they would have to
come out.

How suitable do you feel your I think nearly all of my locations were quite good for the
locations were for your filming? atmosphere they needed to give off. Danny’s room was very
dark with the black and grey walls which could portray his dull
life or his dark mental state. The murder location in my opinion
was very good, it was extremely isolated so it was very easy to
film without many disturbances from pedestrians, on the murder
scene, that day was quite cloudy making the day quite dark but
under the trees at the filming location even darker which gives
off a more sinister effect which I could amplify in the editing
process.

How have you made use of the I have made good use of tracking shots from the front and back
technical skills you have developed so of the moving character which I think makes the scene more
far this year? exciting since the camera is in motion with the character
making the audience more involved in the film itself. J & L Cuts
have become normal for me to use since it makes conversation
flow much better. However, in the last conversation near the
end of my production between Danny and The Dog Walker I
used less of that technique to make more of an unnatural and
uncomfortable environment between them to show that
something is wrong with Danny and that the Dog Walker has his
suspicions which triggers Danny’s immense paranoia throughout
the end of the film.

Having reviewed your footage, are I am quite happy with the footage I have so far got. I still need
you happy with what you have to film a couple more scenes such as the paranoid walk home
captured and does anything need after the murder, the nightmare scene with the mysterious girl
reshooting? and scenes where he walks home after the first robbing scene
with the bully. So far, I haven’t noticed anything that needs re-
filming yet.

Are you ready to edit? If not, how far I have started partly editing but not very in-depth yet, I have put
behind are you? some music in and started to go in to some depth on some
scenes at the start of the film. I have a couple more scenes to
film but I definitely think I will finish the final cut before the
deadline.

What work do you need to complete I need to record the final scenes of my short film, carry on with
outside of lessons to stay on track? the editing process and complete weekly blogs.
